Sophie L & Esha H

In an impressive start to the year, Huntingtower students won both the Debaters Association of Victoria's Intermediate and Senior Public Speaking Competitions. Run as a state-wide tournament, students present a series of prepared and impromptu speeches, with the top performing student across both categories named the winner of the competition.

Congratulations to Sophie (Year 9) who won the DAV Intermediate Public Speaking Competition for students in Years 9 and 10 with a powerful prepared speech on the need for greater diversity in films, news and media.

Congratulations as well to Esha (Year 11) who won the DAV Senior Public Speaking Competition for students in Years 11 and 12 with a thought-provoking speech on the dangers of trial-by-media.

Michael X & Chloe D

For the first time a Huntingtower student has won the Rotary Ainger Peck Public Speaking award. The competition, run annually by the Rotary Clubs of Richmond and Melbourne Park, attracts speakers from across the city and is unique in that it focuses purely on delivery and engagement of an audience by a speaker, rather than assessing the content of the speech.

After winning their respective heats, both Chloe D and Michael X were among the final 10 students to compete in the Grand Final of the 2022 competition.

Chloe D (Year 10) won the Grand Final of the Rotary Ainger Peck Award. Despite some extremely tough competition, Chloe took out first place with a heartfelt and masterfully delivered speech on the power of smiling.

Michael X also competed in the Grand Final after winning his heat and placed third with a very witty speech on idioms, making for an impressive showing by Huntingtower students.

Congratulations to both students on an outstanding achievement!

This year a total of 18 Huntingtower students from Years 7 to 11 competed in the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition across both Junior (Years 7 to 9) and Senior (Years 10 to 12) divisions. The competition requires students to present a prepared persuasive speech in response to one of a set list of topics, with the winners of each heat them proceeding into a semi-final where they must present a short-notice speech as well.

Special congratulations go out to Kishaya S (Year 7) and Julia P (Year 9), who both won their heats and made it to the semi-finals of the competition, and to Keira L (Year 9), who was the runner-up of the south-eastern region of the Voice of Youth Junior competition.
