Gifted Awareness Week

This week, 21 to 29 May, has been Gifted Awareness Week in Australia. Centered around this year’s theme of ‘Like Minds’ we have been running a number of activities across the school to embrace the talents and abilities of our students. It kicked off with a Junior School and Middle School pi competition, where participants had to remember pi to as many digits as possible. In the Junior School, Elza Mulder was second with 38 digits, while Ysabella Gavin achieved 40. The Middle School saw even higher numbers with Craig Wiech citing 110 digits, and Amy Medway a massive 122. Their recall abilities were amazing.

On Tuesday, we had a Junior School games day where students from Years Three to Six participated in games that tested their minds and built friendships. The favourite was 'Rubik’s Race', and the lunch time event was so popular it will become a weekly occurrence. All are encouraged to come along and give it a try.

Wednesday saw homerooms test their knowledge in an online quiz, while Thursday saw the beginning of the paper airplane competition. This was to see how students could utilise their knowledge of engineering and physics to create a lightweight aircraft that uses forces to fly the furthest. This was also supported by a reading afternoon in the Junior School with older, avid readers, reciting STEM related picture books to younger students.

The wealth of knowledge we have in the school, in so many different areas of interest is amazing to see and it was great to have so many students participate in this week’s events.

Wilson Fundraising Day

As part of Wilson’s fundraising day, students from across the whole school enjoyed ice creams at lunch time for a gold coin donation and wore their "BLING" as the theme for the day. All money raised will be donated to Young House (Albany Youth Support Association).

Young House is a safe space for young people in Albany who seek crisis accommodation.

The amazing staff of Young House help those in need get back on their feet, make connections with employment opportunities and help facilitate transition back to home or find an alternate living arrangement.

Year Eight Pilot Course

This experimental programme concludes this week. After five weeks of fluctuating class numbers, last week’s lesson was fulsome and rich, as students offered their varying opinions, each listening and reflecting on others’ different offerings, around assertive communication and boundary setting. We have covered physical health, brain development, parts of the brain, emotional awareness, how to take a brain pause when we need it, assertive communication, how we may behave differently according to our various roles; this week concludes with further information on boundary setting and values. I’ve certainly enjoyed working with this class and thank each of them for their contributions.
