From the Chaplain

I am on the Sunday School roster at church once a month.  This week the children were learning about the ways in which God talks to us. Many people assume that God does not talk to them as they do not hear a clear, loud, audible voice.  But that is not the case.  As we discussed, God can talk to us in a variety of ways such as:

  • Through other people
  • Through the bible
  • Through our thoughts
  • Through circumstances
  • In our dreams
  • Through music/songs

The children were asked if they had any examples of God talking to them.  One little boy put up his hand and said, ‘a few days ago I was sitting at school and I felt really dumb, that I was useless and had no friends. I think God said to me, “I have more good thoughts about you than all the grains of sand in the world,” or something like that anyway.’  Much to the child’s surprise, it was then explained to him that what he just said was a bible verse.  He had no idea it was from the bible and soon realised that what he heard really was God speaking to him.

The bible verse God told this boy comes from Psalm 139:17-18 and says,

‘How precious to me are your thoughts, God!  How vast is the sum of them!

Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.’

This is a beautiful verse and shows us how much God loves us and has good, precious thoughts towards us.  We may have doubts about ourselves, but this shows that God has nothing but positive thoughts about us and thousands of good thoughts that would be hard to imagine.

It is important to take time out with God so that we can learn to recognise his voice like the little boy did.  John 10:27 says,

‘My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.’
