Red Moort Arts Camp

We’re holding an Arts camp for students in Year Ten looking to extend their Arts skills in Drama, Media, Textiles and Painting at the end of this term (30 June and 1 July). It will be an immersive experience that also allows students to make a connection to the land that we live on.

The camp will be held at the Bush Heritage site, Red Moort Reserve, on Monjebup Road near the Stirling Ranges. This is a revegetation site where native plants are being seeded and native animals are returning such as the mallee fowl, black footed wallaby, black cockatoos, honey possums. This site represents the protection and preservation of our unique biodiversity for future generations. It is a very beautiful place.

Aunty Carol Pettersen will be joining us for the camp and will talk to the students about the significance of the place to Indigenous people. Mr Alex Hams from Bush Heritage will be taking us on a walk through the reserve to a woodland of 80 year old Red Moort trees.

The Red Moort eucalypt tree is only found near the Stirling Ranges and this site has a woodland on it. Red Moort is the theme for our whole school exhibition. Students participating in the camp will have the opportunity to develop creative ideas that will contribute to the exhibition and our Yoh Fest entry. Artist-in-residence, Ms Mand Markey will be present and she will facilitating costume design workshops inspired by the site. There will be Media and Drama workshops, developing characters for the costumes. There will also be a set design workshop that will involve creating a mural to be included in the exhibition.

The garments designed with Ms Mand Markey will be on display at the Albany Town Hall, the school art exhibition and at the Albany Entertainment Centre. There will be a number of opportunities for Drama students to model the garments in character including Yoh Fest.

There are still a number of places available for any interested students, please contact Ms Mordy if you are interested - rachel.mordy@gsg.wa.edu.au
