Bishop Patrick Francis Lyons

Bishop Patrick Francis Lyons was the fourth Bishop of Sale. He was the first Australian born Bishop of Sale. He sat in the Bishop’s Chair from 1957-1967. As may be imagined, Bishop Lyons came from a strong Catholic family. He was born in Melbourne in 1903 and was educated in turn by the Sisters of Mercy and the Christian Brothers in West Melbourne (Sisters of Mercy) and West and North Melbourne (Christian Brothers).

Prior to becoming Bishop of Sale, Patrick Lyons was Bishop of Christchurch, New Zealand and Auxiliary Bishop of Sydney.

Although he was only a young man, Lyons was a clerk in the Department of the Navy for four years before beginning his priestly formation. His ability was noted by Daniel Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne. Mannix sent Lyons to Rome in 1923 for study at the Pontifical Urban College of Propaganda Fide. He was ordained as a priest of Melbourne in 1927. He was named Vicar-General in 1939 and in 1940 he was appointed Knight of the Crown of Italy.

As Bishop of Sale he negotiated the extension of the Diocese of Sale to the west of Warragul in 1959. In that year eight parishes including Berwick were detached from the Melbourne Archdiocese and became part of the Diocese of Sale. It will be noted that Cranbourne is not listed as a parish of the Sale Diocese. This is because Cranbourne became a parish in 1979 when it detached from Berwick.

The work of Bishop Lyons is remembered by the building that bears his name situated at the Clyde North Campus of St. Peter’s College.
