Subject Expos & Information Sessions

Karen Harris

Principal

Subject Selection and Learning Pathways are at the forefront this term.  The college is presenting a number of Middle and Senior School Subject Expos as well as Information Sessions for students and parents covering expectations for all year levels in 2020.

Student & Parent Information Sessions

Year Level Information Sessions provide families with a valuable overview of the curriculum relevant to a particular year level, along with gaining an understanding of the expectations around work practices and student behaviour.  It is an opportunity to hear information first-hand from the Principal, Sub-School Leader and Year Level Coordinator, and to access information and requirements around programs specific to a year level, such as the Careers Work Experience Program (Year 10).

BSC also runs more specific information sessions to help our community - for example the VTAC Information Session which focuses on the significance of the VCE ATAR  and requirements for receiving and accepting offers of placement at tertiary institutions. A number of programs will also run specific information sessions throughout the year, including the Instrumental Music Program.

Why are Subject Expos so Important?

Subject Expos provide students with the opportunity to 'browse' subjects on offer.

They have the chance to not only speak to teachers, but to listen to and consider the experiences of older students who are currently, or have previously, completed the subject at the relevant year level.

Significantly, the BSC Careers Counsellor and some tertiary institutions are present at the senior expos, so that students can enquire about subject requirements for tertiary courses. With this information, students are able to make better informed decisions around their subject choices and can then move toward their Subject Selection interviews  with confidence.

Subject Selection Interviews

Continuing this process, students meet one-on-one with a staff member to discuss and clarify their subject choices for next year.  This is an opportunity for them to ask deeper questions about the study matter and to analyse how this subject fits in with their overall learning and career pathway expectations.  Once this is complete, students are asked to discuss the outcomes with their parents and then to submit their Subject Selection forms.
