Middles Social Justice Inquiry: Different lives, same rights?

This term the Middles have been focusing on Social Justice as part of their guided inquiry. We have focused on the key principle that all people are equal, they deserve the same rights, and they deserve to be treated with dignity. We have explored human rights, specifically The Rights of the Child, diversity of people and identities (race, gender, abilities, age, religion and beliefs) and stereotypes through discussions, text and media.

We have examined social injustices and discussed ways to combat these through either personal behaviour change, self-acceptance of their own or others identities and beliefs, and calling out injustice when they feel safe to do so. Young people have an acute awareness of right over wrong, just over unjust. Children notice differences often without discomfort or apology.

The Middles have been extremely responsive in their observations, reflections, sharing of anecdotes and hopes for a preferred future.

Juniors Inquiry - Equity vs Equality

This week in Inquiry, the Juniors focussed on ‘Equity vs Equality’. Unit LD did an excellent job at defining what equality and equity meant to them as well as responding to this task creatively through either written examples or video responses- Unit LD sure does have some great actors/actresses! Here below are some great written examples from Unit LD on what they thought equity and equality meant before watching this insightful YouTube video ‘Equity and Equality’ by Susan K. Gardner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCS7Rus4_-Y&t=102s

Indonesian Poster Competition

SELAMAT HARI MERDEKA and congratulations to all those who entered posters in the Independence Day poster competition run by VILTA (Victorian Indonesian Language Teachers Association). Our big kids missed out on prizes this time but our grade three’s one third, second and first place – go grade threes!

As you can see, their posters included lots of pictorial information, especially about the games and competitions used to celebrate Independence day. Lilia from TD came third, Rayma from KM came second and Sofia from KM, with a wonderful street seen that really captures the festive atmosphere of Hari Merdeka in Indonesia, won first place.
