Practice Makes Perfect

Practice makes perfect - and the Year 7 Cadets have been getting camp site skills honed recently.

At the end of last week the students headed out with Year 12 leaders for their annual camp, and to ensure that all the tents had the parts they need, students were asked to put them up and then pack and load them straight into the truck to ensure they were ready for use.

Practice Pays Off

And here we have the evidence of that practice unfolding!  Day 1 of the Year 7 cadets camp arrived, and it was all hands on deck to ready for a night in the great outdoors.

Fantastic Fundraising!

The Thursday Sausage Sizzle has now been running for four weeks, raising close to $400 so far. This week's team was from the Year 10 class who are raising money for the School Ball in early 2021. The team including Sophie Wilde, Harry Jarman, Lucia Kindt, Lucy Burge and Chad Stonehouse did an excellent job!

Well done, team!

Nine Men's Morris

Mr Taylor has had a run of success with a game called "Nine Mens' Morris". Today during the House lesson, the high school ran a Nine Mens' Morris championship resulting a tie between Seb McGuinness and Tessa Schifferli. The finals were played on game sets made by Mr Taylor as samples for a woodworking project he is running with his junior woodwork classes. Great job, Mr Taylor!

Drone Piloting Skills

Last Friday the campus was awash with so many activities in our Secondary School - and even the drones were out on the oval.  Mrs Miles has a Drone Piloting class, and these students were showcasing their control skills and cornering techniques as Mr Meyer walked by.

Thanks Mr Meyer for capturing it on film for us!

Electrifying Science

When life gives you lemons, you make electricity!

Mr Jones' Year 9 Science class were charged (pardon the pun!) to make a battery from lemons, and impressively, these three young men generated over 10 volts. Well done Sebastian, Nathan and Noah for your successful completion of the challenge.

Cadets Rotation

Mrs Wright isn't just a wonderful teacher who we adore, but she's pretty handy as a roving reporter as well!

Here's another edition from what we could affectionately call 'Wright's Writing'.

'Part of Cadets is our Crews - which we have had for part of this term. We also incorporate rotations in our squads.

Today our rotations started with Teams, Mountain Biking and Environment. My Environment group cleaned up the Primary School Veggie garden. Fixing some of the garden beds and adding new mulch ready for the students in primary school to do some Spring planting! Another group weeded the Bush Tucker garden near the library! A great afternoon’s work!'

Well done, everyone!

Spring Celebrations!

Despite what the weather might say, last Tuesday was actually the first day of spring!

Traditionally, the Year 6 students decorate the area near their classrooms with floral displays, and undertake a number of spring inspired activities and crafts. This year was no different.

Unfortunately the weather did cause some havoc amongst the displays, but regardless, the students (and their parents) did a beautiful job of celebrating this season of fresh starts.

Well done, Year 6s!

The Year 3's contribution to this story:

The Year 3 class were pretty impressed with the floral display by the Year 6s and so Mrs Meyer took hold of that enthusiasm. With a foundation in grammar, the students were asked to write alliteration on the object they took a photo of, and here's two examples of what they came up with.

Signing in COGGs

Primary COGGs recently had a new element which was a wonderful addition. As the students introduced songs, Bella signed along to provide those with hearing loss the opportunity to very much be a part of the event. Well done, to everyone involved.

Op Shop Opportunity

Mr Meyerink's Year 5 students had a practical lesson in economics during their excursion to Zubisiso Op Shop. What made this special, is that the were able to spend time with Mrs Cameron, who taught them right back at the start of their Cornerstone education.

The students were able to also blend their learning with some volunteering, and were really helpful with sorting through items. The big treat was taking their $2 and finding a pre-loved item to call their own.

The photos show that it was a lot of fun.

Wonderful!

Sew Good!

It's never too early to learn a technical skill!

The Year 1 class have a special project they are completing, and it requires sewing. Mrs Kuendig believes that the students, with the correct support and supervision, are very capable of achieving some great outcomes. It was clearly evidenced with this activity. Just look at the smile on Cadence's face. Priceless!

Respect

The importance of values and how they are embedded within the Cornerstone experience is something that is being pursued very intentionally in our Primary school program.

Our Chaplain, Mrs Blennerhassett, has been working in partnership with some of the leadership and staff in the primary years, to put practical applications into living out those values.

The current value that is being pursued is 'Respect', and inclusive activities, classroom learning and discussions have all been working towards seeing it is a growth point in the primary years.

Each week, the students are given an area within the grounds to be able to chalk draw - and today, with a theme of respect, some inclusive artwork activities appeared.

It's a great partnership within our staff team, and we are grateful each of them.

Rockets and Sausages

There's always some great creations coming from Mr Taylor's workshop, and last week the aroma of sausages drew our attention.

It was a rocket stove that Glyn had finished, and he was testing it out with a tasty outcome.

Well done, Glyn!

Musical Mystery

This term the Year 3 & 4s have been studying all different aspects of music (such as note recognition, note values and dynamics). This study was then applied through a game situation.

In the theme of “Escape rooms” where clues are followed to find a ‘key’, the students played an 'Escape the Music Room’ game.   This was organised by Mrs DeVilliers.

Through expert clue-solving, these were the deserving winners. Well done!

Hospitality for Helpers

The Hospitality students at the College completed their final service period assessment today, and blessed a lot of diners in the process. Our guests were largely those who serve our community - including classroom volunteer assistants, produce providers, groundsmen, cleaners and office administrators.

Under the watchful eye of Mrs Moorcroft, and supported by Mrs Spencer, the students served up a gorgeous chicken salad with Mango mayonnaise and a selection of desserts. The food was divine and the service delightful.

Well done to everyone - and congratulations on completing your practical assessments.

University Visit

As always, there's been a lot happening on campus today, and in the midst of the activity some serious discussions were also unfolding. On hand today were some representatives from several of the universities, who met with senior students to discuss the process of selecting pathways after school. It's always helpful to have those who are part of the next stage in a student's journey ready to help them as they take the next step.

Cricket on the Oval

The WACA have visited the College this week, and the primary kids took part in a Cricket clinic at lunch. The oval was full! There were some very determined kids and the oval was a buzz of fun and laughter!

Thanks Mr Meyerink for bringing that to the campus for us.

Gold Star Merits

We love celebrating the great outcomes of students - and have no greater delight than seeing students achieving character based awards. Our Merit rewards are given when students accumulate acknowledgements for behaviour, hard work, team spirit, kindness and thoughtful actions.

Yesterday's primary COGGs saw a range of students celebrated - and these young ladies have reached the gold level award stage for merit accumulation. Congratulations to Karli, Cara, Molly and Loucia.

Heartfelt Science

A special 'heartfelt' story from Mr Cleaver:

'The Year 8’s have been busy learning about Body Systems in Science. A few weeks ago we dissected hearts, with Mrs Lucas demonstrating. This week we dissected kidneys. Some students have loved the experience while others ... maybe not so keen to enter the field of Medicine!'

Well done, everyone.

Athletic Festivities are Go!

With the Primary Athletics Carnival fast approaching, the house captains have been busy building enthusiasm amongst the student body.  Mr Meyerink captured the excitement as the athletic season was launched.  Ready, set, go!

Woodwork Successes

The Year 8 option of woodwork has had some pretty delightful creations appearing this week. Mr Taylor is thrilled with the individually designed and crafted wooden trucks that the students have made - claiming that they are some of the best work in this project he's seen in a number of years.

Well done, Year 8s. They are wonderful!

Busselton Basketball Slam Series

The Busselton Slam Series Basketball Tournament for Year 5 and 6s has unfolded today. This was an inter-school tournament against other local schools.  The kids did a great job and all won a number of their games.

We are very thankful to the parents and high school students that helped coach, as well as the loan of strips from our very own Cornerstone Basketball Club.  We also want to thank the enthusiastic parent cheer squad who came along in support.

A great day on the court.
