SCHOOL CONCERT

Practice sessions for our concert are well underway, and students are very excited about their upcoming performances.  There are many excellent seats available for family and friends to enjoy the performance, on Tuesday 16 September at the Palais Theatre.

Book through Ticketmaster or through the Palais Box Office. (See page 7.)

A nearby restaurant to the Palais, Bay City Burrito, has offered 15% off prices for school families on the night.

CELEBRATE NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK AT HOME

To help celebrate Science Week, there are activities you can do at home with younger children.

Why not try building a bridge using natural or processed materials? Challenge children to build a bridge to span 40cm to carry a matchbox car. This could involve using straws or spaghetti and masking tape.

Children can explore how to filter water so that it becomes pure and clear. This experiment involves constructing a water filter using 2 plastic drink bottles and scissors.

The challenge is to experiment with different materials to find the one that filters water the best. Try using sand, gravel, pantyhose, cotton balls, elastic bands or charcoal to see which one works best.

Or how about constructing a roller coaster from whatever is available around the home to deliver a ball bearing or marble from table height to the floor in the longest time possible? The challenge is to include a series of obstacles such as loops, slides and a change in direction.

HOMEWORK POLICY REVIEW

After a two month process and, as a result of feedback from parents and teachers, our draft homework policy has been revised.

At last night’s Education meeting the committee made further amendments and the revised policy is now ready to go to School Council for endorsement.

We have considered all comments provided and understand that homework means different things to different people.

Please note that we have renamed the Homework policy and it is now a Home Learning policy, which better reflects our PYP philosophy which sees our students as learners rather than home tasks being work/a chore.

I have attached a copy with this week’s newsletter. If you wish to make a comment please email the school – murrumbeena.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au
