Remote Learning

Congratulations to students, parents, carers, teachers, administration and other members of the school community.  In general the way that the majority of students were able to adapt in such a short period of time to remote learning left us is awe of their ability to deal with the massive changes.  Many of our staff appreciate the struggles that students had with technology, as at times we experienced the same issues.  But within a week, we had the majority of our Year 9 and 10 students logged onto the WebEx classes and actively participating in remote learning. A very big thank you also to the parents and carers for your support and understanding during this time.

Return to School

The return to school has gone smoothly.  In week 8 we held a remote assembly for Year 9 and 10 students to showcase the changes that have been made around the Kings Park Campus in line with the Department of Education and Training and Victorian Health Department COVID-19 regulations. Students had over 150 questions and comments that they made during the assembly.  Ms. Geyer and Ms. Tauber were frantically typing responses to the questions that the students were asking.  The concerns that the students had were genuine and have already been alleviated since returning to school.

Term 3

In Term 3, both Year 9 and Year 10 students will be making their subject selections for 2021. It is important that Year 9 students work with Ms. Geyer, Ms. Tauber and Mr. Rankin to get their subject selections completed on time to ensure they are able to study the subjects they want. Year 10 students will need to make sure they attend the Career classes with Ms. Bella Moore to make sure they choose the correct subjects for their future pathway.  Certain career pathways require specific subjects to be studied at VCE level.  If you are unsure, please make an appointment to see Ms. Bella Moore.  To help students and parents understand the process and for an opportunity to ask questions, a Pathways Expo will be held for Year 10 students going into Year 11 in 2021 on Thursday the 23rd of July. More information regarding this has been posted on Compass.

Japanese

A highlight this week for some Year 10 students was cooking Okonomiyaki in Japanese class. The students cooked the savoury pancakes from scratch and enjoyed sampling some traditional Japanese cuisine.

Important dates for Term 3 are:

13 July – Start of Term 3

5 August – Curriculum Day

14 August – Year 10 Immunisations

21 August – VCAL Project Presentations (Year 10 Students intending on studying VCAL in 2021 will be invited)

3rd of September – Student Led Presentations

4th of September – Curriculum Day

18th of September – End of Term 3

Wishing our Copperfield Community a very safe Winter Break.  Please remember to stay safe during these continued unknown times. Remember to maintain your social distancing for the safety you, your family and the wider school community.

Making Pikelets

During remote learning, Mr Hanania asked our class 8D2 to use our kitchen and to do an experiment which is making pikelets to learn about physical and chemical changes in science . We had to take various and optional steps to make this masterpiece. We had to complete a table and use the steps given to us to make the pikelets and write for each step whether it was a chemical or physical change and give a reason why. First but most importantly, I had to wash my hands. We had to make the pancake batter so we sifted flour and sugar together in a bowl and then to crack an egg. After that I mixed the batter well until the mixture was smooth. Then I had to cook the mixture on the pan and to wait until bubbles were formed. I had to flip the pikelet to cook the other side. Finally I put jam on top of the pikelet as a topping and washed the dishes. The pikelets were easy and fun to make with simple and clear steps, and it was a little messy when dealing with flour that fell onto the table.

Here is a sample of our production.
