Magis report

Intergenerational Project

A group of Magis students have demonstrated their commitment to ‘doing more’ within the wider community – through their involvement in our Intergenerational Project. Students interviewed residents from Mercy Village Wembley - collating these articles into a book titled ‘Days Gone By’. Last month, students and residents conversed over tea and scones – sharing memories, telling stories, and connecting on a personal level. This Intergenerational Project has afforded both students and residents the opportunity to connect and share in conversation. Students have also been able to develop written and oral skills, but particularly grow in maturity and understanding of life experiences. It has been an enriching and rewarding experience for all involved – and the students are very grateful for the friendship and openness of the residents. These stories have provided an incredible insight into the past and should be cherished. Copies of the book will be available from the Magis Office in Term 1. Special thanks to Ms Gray for her assistance with the program.

A year in review

2022 has been a year like no other, and I commend all staff and students on their flexibility and resilience adapting to changes to event formats and competition dates. The end of the year affords us the opportunity to reflect upon the year that’s been – but also to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Magis and Altiora students. Here are some highlights:

  • We won the state finals of Creative Edge - winning the Society & Environment and Literature & Communication Awards, as well as the Alec Pascoe Spirit Award for outstanding teamwork.
  • Our Year 8 Team did exceptionally well at the Da Vinci Decathlon taking first place in the Legacy Challenge and third place for Creative Producers.
  • Our senior Ethics Team were awarded the silver medal in the Australasian Ethics Olympiad and bronze medal in the International Ethics Olympiad Final.
  • We reached the state finals in Debating and the United Nations Voice Competition.
  • We qualified for the Global Round of the World Scholars Cup – and our teams are very much looking forward to continuing their success in 2023.

Special thanks to all the staff that have assisted with the continued success of the Magis program. To all the student participants, thank you for your ongoing enthusiasm and passion for all things Magis. And lastly, to our Year 12 Magis leaders, thank you for your outstanding commitment and leadership over the past five years. May the philosophy of Magis continue to guide you on your academic journey.

The Magis Program will continue to offer students the chance to compete in the top state gifted student competitions as well as national and global events. Expressions of Interest forms will be sent out at the start of Term 1. I invite all students to take up the Magis Spirit of ‘doing more’ in 2023.

Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas. May God bless you throughout this holiday season. Here’s to doing ‘more’ next year.
