Welcome to STEM

We would like to quickly explain STEM as our new Specialist subject at Hillsmeade PS. STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. It is about students using previous and new knowledge across these and other areas of the curriculum to design and create various STEM challenges. Our first STEM challenge has been to create a sunsmart hat using only the materials provided to each group. They also only had 20 minutes to complete the challenge. Here are some finished products of the STEM challenge:

Students have also given their thoughts on what STEM is after the first session:

"STEM in my mind is a fun new way to learn new skills like teamwork and it also helps when you focus on your work."

"To me STEM is fun experiments in class that you don't want to miss out on. You can do experiments and make stuff. Learning stuff like animal bodies, chemicals and way more."

"STEM is a fun activity that we do once a week. It is an engaging activity that includes science building and experiments. It's about testing our limits and having fun, including others and lots of fun things."
