Transition Program

The Science staff have enjoyed getting to know the students over the past two weeks of transition – our 2023 Year 9’s have begun their study of Palaeobiology, the Year 8 students have started learning about writing a Claim, Evidence and Reason discussion after building mousetrap cars and our new VCE students have been introduced to their study designs and have been given their pre-reading and holiday homework.

Although we don’t want our Year 11 and 12 students to spend their entire summer holiday completing homework, we do want our VCE students to be sure that they are ready to learn when they return in Term 1 next year. Re-read your transition booklets and check what reading and learning tasks your teachers have set so that when you return for the new year you are ready to achieve your very best.

Science Competitions in 2022 – THANK YOU!

As this is our last newsletter for the year, I want to thank all of the students that enthusiastically participated in our many Science Competitions during 2022. We ran The Big Science Competition, the International Chemistry Quiz, ICAS Science and the Junior and Senior Olympiad. Although not all students achieve distinctions or high distinctions, it is truly a valuable experience to put yourself outside  your comfort zone and to test your abilities. It also helps to practice answering questions under test or examination conditions. These competitions will be running again in 2023 so keep an eye out on Compass as these notifications appear.

I would like to extend a huge congratulations to Jerry L of Year 8 who was selected to partake in the invitation-only Australian Science Innovations Academy for the top 50 students in the country based on their Olympiad results. Congratulations Jerry – we hope you enjoy the experience!

Thank you Mrs Dwyer, Ms Angland and Mr Jay

As we bring 2022 to a close, the Science Learning Area would like to wish three of our dedicated teachers all the very best for next year as they take on new and exciting adventures!

Mrs Dwyer, Ms Angland and Mr Jay will not be at VSC next year and you will all be missed! Good luck and take care.

On behalf of all teachers in the Science department we wish our friends of the College and our students and their families a safe and happy holiday and we look forward to seeing you next year!
