Rocket Launches

There was excitement in the air over Trinity this week as the Year 8-10 Astronomy students finally got to launch their student-built rockets on Mann Oval.

While the Year 8 and 9 students used pre-manufactured retail parts to build their rockets, the Year 10 students sourced their own materials from household items such as PVC pipe, tablecloth and plumbers string… with some additional help from the D&T department for the more specialised equipment such as nosecones and tailfins.

A batch of ‘dodgy’ fuses caused long delays with the Year 8 and 9 launches. In the end, all but one of the rockets was launched successfully… albeit with only two minutes left on our launch window with Perth Airport Control Tower.

The Year 10 rocket launches were another learning experience. Because Trinity is in controlled airspace, the selection of rocket motors was purposely on the ‘low powered’ side for the mass of the rocket. However, this proved to be overly detrimental to the overall maximum height achieved, with the Year 10 rockets only climbing to around 1/3 of their expected apogee.

The rocket launches this week were a beneficial learning experience for the Trinity Astronomy students and there was already excited talk amongst the students of what they wanted to achieve for next year’s launches.

Italian Week Wrap Up

This week our annual Italian Week celebrations were an opportunity for the school community to once again celebrate the Italian language and culture.

Once again the gelato van was a big hit and popular amongst the staff and students with many taking the opportunity to enjoy a delicious gelato from Amico Café.

Wednesday saw the return of the Giro di Trinity: a staff verses students scooter race. At recess the Junior School boys took on 4 of the Junior School teachers and successfully defended their shield from last year. The Senior School boys looked like they had it in the bag; however, one of the boys fell off allowing the teachers to take the win once again. Mr Nick Kros, captain of the teacher’s team, has been in the winning time both years and is planning making it a three-peat next year! The Year 6 classes enjoyed making gnocchi from scratch with signora Tati. They got to take the fresh gnocchi home to cook with their family!

As usual Thursday was the highlight of the week with the boys enjoying freshly made traditional pizza and the Italian car and motorbike display. The cars and bikes were kindly displayed by the Fiat-Lancia Club of WA and the Ducati Club of WA. The boys were able to look at the car, their motors and even sit in some of them.

The new event this year which was a big hit with many students was the pasta eating competition. 4 Year 11 students took on Mr Ben Kriszyk and Ms Katherine Licciardello with student James from the Year 11 Italian class easily taking the win.

Blue Tree Project

Following on from Wellness Week in Term 3, after four attempts due to poor weather a selection of students from Years 7 -11 finally got the chance on Monday to head to Waterford to paint a tree blue in support of the Blue Tree Project

Continuing on from our inaugural Blue Tree Day in Term 1 PSA Sport, and the generosity of the cricket community, as well as Cameleon Coatings & Paint Manufacturers our mission along with the ‘Blue Tree Project’ is to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns.

The Blue Tree Project - which began in Mukinbudin in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt - encourages people to talk about mental health and speak up if they are suffering from depression or anxiety. The grass roots movement encourages people to paint a dead tree that needs a "blue lease on life" in memory of a friend who lost their life to depression.

We hope by spreading the paint and spreading the message that "it’s OK to not be OK", we can help break down the stigma that’s still largely attached to mental health. Once a year as part of the PSA summer sports season Trinity College will raise funds and focus their attention on spreading the message and talking about the reality that is mental health.

A massive shout out to the Dayne and the maintenance team for all their preparation and support in making this happen to allow us to spark such importance conversations.
