Huntingtower Cypress Trees

80 year old Cypress Trees

Sadly, following consultation with an Arborist, the row of cypress trees near the oval and staff car park are unfortunately past their life and need to be removed as they pose a safety risk.

The trees are over 80 years old and are overmature, opening out with their sheer weight and age and dropping spears and large limbs.

The trees will be removed this week. We realise this will change the landscape of the school significantly, however we are committed to creating a wonderful new area that can be used by the students and staff.

The School has formed a landscaping design committee and engaged a landscape designer to redesign the area next year. Some of the ideas currently being worked on include:

  • Create 4 key areas in the space – external seating area for teaching, viewing, lunchtime eating.
  • Create an active space close to the MYC for fitness, popular table tennis, and down ball.
  • A reflective garden space behind the Library.  It can be a restful, peaceful, reading area compatible with the adjacent library and Hub beyond.
  • A student led horticultural / orchard area separating the carpark and oval compatible with the Environ / Stem building nearby and Wellbeing areas.
  • Also an acknowledgement to the past use of the land as an orchard in the 1940’s

We will keep you all informed as this landscape design project progresses in 2022.
