MATHS

MATHS ENHANCEMENT CLUB

Every Tuesday lunchtime, upstairs in A-block, Mathematics becomes the central attraction. In the “West wing” (A14 and A17), we have the traditional Maths Help Class that most students are familiar with. But did you know that in the “East wing” (A07) more exciting mathematics is being done by a group of enthusiasts?

Led by Mr Georgiadis and Dr Law, Maths Enhancement Club supports students who are interested in extending their knowledge in mathematics, engaging in problem solving activities, listening to talks given by experts and participating in national competitions. We manage (and hence, are the first point of contact for) inter-school events such as:

  • Computational and Algorithmic Thinking $6.50 (CAT) competition (March 2021);
  • AMT Maths Challenge Program, $26 (Term 2, 2021);
  • AMT Maths Enrichment Program, $42 (Term 2-3 2021) High Achievers program;
  • Australian Maths Competition, $6.50 (July 2021)

Please fill out the Competition entry google form and pay through Compass once you're added to the event.

Also, interested Year 7 & 8 students should look out for our annual McK Sudoku Challenge in late Term 1/early Term 2.

Besides the focus on competition, the Maths Enhancement Club is an opportunity for students to explore new concepts and ideas, or discover new perspectives on known facts.

Our fortnightly lectures cover topics from number patterns and shapes to the symmetries in nature and more.

Pop-in and see for yourself, no sign-up required.

Upcoming Workshop: Maths in Real Life - Tuesday 9 March (A7)

What is maths? Why should I learn it? How can it be used? Is it fun?

Join us for a semi-interactive mini workshop to get these and many other questions answered. Together we will take a short trip into the past to see how the so-called applied mathematics was developed. We will follow the steps of such geniuses as Newton and Einstein to see how the World around us can be described using very simple laws of mathematics that everyone can understand. How lucky are we to live in a Universe as simple as ours! Help me to create an alternate Universe where the mathematical laws of life are slightly different.
