Extension & Enrichment

Extension & Enrichment

My name is Teena and this year, I am the High Ability Practice Leader at CHS. My role is to coordinate the Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) and the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series (VCES) which were introduced by the Department of Education in Term 3 of 2020. You can read more about it here: Student Excellence Program. The VHAP program is for students in Years 7-8 who have been identified by the Department of Education and Training (DET) as High-Ability in either Mathematics or English. The selected students complete one lesson a week (delivered by Virtual Schools Australia) for the duration of the Term, ending in a 'Masterclass/Celebration'. A new group of students have the chance to participate in VHAP each Term and students can only participate once, so if selected - it is such an amazing achievement and opportunity!

Henry C is a Year 8 student participating in the Mathematics VHAP program this Term, here is what he has to say:

This term I have had the opportunity to participate in a maths program run by the Department called VHAP. Once a week on a Wednesday myself and a few other students join a webex meeting to learn some extracurricular maths. So far, we have looked at palindromes and eventually we are going to be focusing on paradoxes. The learning has certainly been unique in the sense that we would never normally look at things like this and being delivered online, gives us the chance to figure things out for ourselves and collaborate with other students in the program. Overall, I have enjoyed this program and would recommend taking if you are given the opportunity. - Henry C

The VCES is a new series of high-quality, funded extension activities across all areas of the curriculum. This is available for students in Years 7-12. There are a wide range of programs to choose from. The list of CHS Extension & Enrichment opportunities available can be found here. You will find a list of opportunities in each faculty area, links to descriptions of the programs as well as which teacher/staff member to speak to if you are interested in extending or enriching yourself. If you would like any more information about VHAP or VCES please email:teena.polyviou@coburg.vic.edu.au
