CHS Garden

The Great Kitchen Garden is BACK for 2021!

Hello Everyone,

2020 was a busy year building and preparing our kitchen garden space. A big thank you goes out to Terriann, Clarice, and Kaine who spent time rebuilding the polytunnel ready for 2021. CHS and the Environmental Team would also like to extend a big THANK YOU to Clarice our neighbour who continued to look after the Kitchen Garden over ISO 2.0 and the summer holidays. Without her support and passion for learning new gardening techniques, we wouldn't have a very fruitful garden or veggies and herbs to sell to staff.

On Sunday the 7th of February we had our first working bee for 2021 where 10 or so amazing parents of CHS came out and helped with weeding out our large garden bed, mulching, and turning over old garden beds. The bok choy, lettuce, beetroot, and beans that were planted have thrived and are nearly ready to sell to our staff. The Environmental Team has started their next project for Term 1 which is building a hoola hoop passage that will extend from the old chicken coop to the large chicken coop. This will employ the design process and allow the students to build and work collaboratively in preparation for our new hens.

Our next working bee is set for Sunday, March the 28th. We will take on the next project which is moving large rocks and building the large chook house enclosure as well as garden and mulch. If you are interested in attending please email anna.vella@coburg.vic.gov.au

A special thank you goes out to our Captains, Tali C, Eleanor K, and Sophie C for inspiring the new generation of environmental leaders and their continued efforts.

Student Voice & Agency in Action

When Moreland Council approached us about getting CHS student perspectives on what the future of Moreland should be, we jumped at the chance to participate. As such, on Friday 26 February, the Conversation Caravan rolled onto our grounds, giving any and all interested students the chance to contribute their thoughts on questions like:

  • What is needed to create a future Moreland you are proud of?
  • What’s needed to improve health, wellbeing and equity in our community?
  • How should Moreland address climate change?
  • What’s needed to make moving around Moreland safer and easier for everyone?
  • What is needed to create a thriving arts industry and local economy?
  • What does your future neighbourhood look and feel like?
  • How can Council partner with our community to recover from COVID-19 stronger?

Here at school, Student Voice Teams are in the process of being established, as too House Leaders. Any student who has an idea they wish to share is encouraged to seek out a Student Support team member to see what can happen to turn their ideas into reality!

Insurance

The Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students.

Cookbook

In 2020 an amazing cookbook was created with the help of staff, student and parent recipes. This cookbook was sold to help raise money for one of our wonderful students Hasti Momeni. Hasti was born with Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia and has fought through much pain and many surgeries over the years to beat this. Hasti is now able to walk around very confidently and comfortably with crutches and we are so proud of the young lady she has become.

I am delighted to announce that $1000 was raised for Hasti from the sales of the cookbooks! Thank you again to everyone that purchased a cookbook. Hasti’s family now has some funds that can assist Hasti when they need to purchase any mobility equipment in the future.
