Diabetes Awareness Day

On Wednesday 30th November, Orchard Grove Primary School will be holding a Diabetes Awareness Day to raise money for Diabetes Australia. Diabetes is a serious condition which can affect the entire body. Diabetes requires daily self care and if complications develop, diabetes can have a significant impact on quality of life and reduce life expectancy. There is currently no cure for diabetes. There are three main types of diabetes - type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.

Why has the Junior School Council decided to choose Diabetes as a fundraiser? This is because diabetes has become one of the biggest challenges confronting Australia’s health system. Around 1.8 million Australians have diabetes. 280 Australians develop diabetes every day. That’s one person every five minutes. It is the fastest growing chronic condition in Australia. More than 120,000 Australians developed diabetes in the past year. For every person diagnosed with diabetes there is usually a family member or carer who also ‘lives with diabetes’ every day in a support role.

So to help raise much needed funds and awareness for diabetes OGPS will be having a free dress day next Wednesday, November 30th. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation and wear blue for diabetes. We hope we can support Diabetes Australia to find treatments to support people living with diabetes.

Thanks,

Deb & Zoe and the Junior School Council
