School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Carlton North PS has been a Schoolwide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) School since 2016. (SWPBS) is a framework that brings together school communities to develop positive, safe, supportive learning cultures. SWPBS assists schools to improve social, emotional, behavioural and academic outcomes for children and young people.

When SWPBS is implemented well, teachers and students have more time to focus on relationships and classroom instruction. Students and staff benefit from:

  • increased respectful and positive behaviour
  • increased time focused on instruction
  • improved social-emotional wellbeing
  • positive and respectful relationships among students and staff
  • increased adoption of evidence-based instructional practices
  • a predictable learning environment with improved perceptions of safety and increased attendance.

CNPS is recognised as a high performing school in Student Wellbeing and our Student Opinion Survey Data is extremely high in comparison to similar schools and the state. These results are evidence of the hard work that our SWPBS Team has done to improve our students’ wellbeing support and the work that all of our staff have done to implement this support.

The International SWPBS community has developed research-validated instruments to assess school implementation. Evaluations in Australia and abroad show that schools implementing SWPBS with fidelity are likely to improve student and staff outcomes. Vic SWPBS Central has selected two main fidelity measures. These are known as the SWPBS Self-assessment Survey (SAS) and the Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI).

Central Vic SWPBS has recently released the 2022 statewide fidelity list. In Victoria, approximately 70 schools are shown to be implementing with fidelity. We are excited to share that CNPS has been identified as one of the schools that has implemented SWPBS with fidelity. The achievement of CNPS implementing with fidelity is to be celebrated and noted for our commitment to implementing SWPBS to a high standard.

Colour Run

We were fortunate to have exceptional weather for our Colour Run on Tuesday. It was a huge success and a great opportunity to celebrate our school community. Our students have raised much needed funds for our school, with the final tally available hopefully next week. Congratulations to all involved and thank you to those parents who assisted or supported our students on the day. This fundraising event requires a huge amount of coordination and we would like to acknowledge the amazing work of Gaby and Trish in organising this event.

Changes to the 2023 School Timetable - Seeking Your Feedback

The 2022 Victorian Government Schools Agreement provides our teaching staff with less face to face teaching time and more time to plan for quality teaching and learning.  In order to be able to accommodate our teaching staff work conditions for 2023, we need to make changes to our school timetable.

In 2023, we will be moving to 1 hour learning sessions as opposed to the current model of 50 minute sessions. Our teaching staff welcome this change as 1 hour sessions mean they have more teaching time to implement our teaching and learning models and this means that our weekly teaching time for Reading, Writing and Mathematics will increase from 250 minutes per week to 300 minutes per week in each of these learning areas.

The change to the timetable means that the timing of our recess and lunch times will be impacted. We are seeking feedback from our school community on 2 proposed models.

Model 1 would mean that our students will have recess from 11:00am to 11:30am and then lunch eating time at 1:30pm with lunch play from 1:40pm to 2:30pm.

Model 1

Session 1 - 9:00am - 10:00am

Session 2 - 10:00am - 11:00am

Recess - 11:00am - 11:30am

Session 3 - 11:30pm -12:30pm

Session 4 - 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Lunch Eating Time - 1:30pm - 1:40pm

Lunch Play - 1:40pm -2:30pm

Session 5 - 2:30pm - 3:30pm

Model 2 would mean that our students will have an early lunch with lunch eating time from 11:00am to 11:10am and then lunch play from 11:10am to 12:00pm we would then have an afternoon recess from 2:00pm to 2:30pm.

Model 2

Session 1 - 9:00am - 10:00am

Session 2 - 10:00am - 11:00am

Lunch Eating Time - 11:00am - 11:10am

Lunch Play - 11:10am - 12:00pm

Session 3 - 12:00pm -1:00pm

Session 4 - 1:00pm - 2:00pm

Afternoon Recess - 2:00pm - 2:30pm

Session 5 - 2:30pm - 3:30pm

When considering each of these models please remember that we do implement brain food breaks during the course of the school day and this will not change in 2023. Regardless of the model chosen for 2023, our staff will ensure that no child is hungry during the course of the school day.

We thank you for your feedback and hope to communicate the preferred model in the coming weeks.

Remembrance Day Friday 11 November

We will be commemorating Remembrance Day tomorrow - 11 November. On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War.

As a mark of respect to those who have died and suffered, Australians are encouraged to pause at 11 am to observe one minute’s silence and remember those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts.

Carlton North PS is an inclusive school community and as we commemorate Remembrance Day we also acknowledge all of our people who fought for their Country. We recognise that those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who fought in conflicts were often not recognised for their service. We acknowledge those who have lost their lives.

The new Victorian Government Schools Agreement states that each teacher is entitled to be released from their scheduled duties including any face to face teaching, for three Professional Practice Days in 2022 to focus on the improved delivery of teaching and learning.
