World Water Day and Earth Hour
The Sustainability team have been organising a sausage sizzle for Cumberland and Dunhelen for weeks now, and on Thursday 31 March the event was finally held! The students were very cooperative and polite throughout the sale, which highlights our team’s interest of running another one.
We planned this sale to promote World Water Day and Earth Hour throughout our school, to show students the damage being caused and the simple actions we can do. All our profit (which will be announced soon!) is going to WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Australia.
Our team would also like to say a HUGE thank you to the students and teachers who helped us throughout lunchtime.

Waste Management at Aitken College
This year, one of the main focuses of the Sustainability team is to promote the importance of the Aitken community working together to do the right thing by putting our rubbish in the correct bins to keep Aitken beautiful. Not only does littered trash make urban and natural places less attractive, but litter has negative impacts for humans, wildlife and the environment.
We have several bins at the College:
Green Compost Bins
A great way to convert the school’s food scraps and yard waste into valuable, natural fertiliser that can then be added to school gardens. It also means that we divert waste from landfill and prevents the subsequent production of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas). Any food scraps can go in these bins: for example, fruits, vegetables, half eaten sandwiches and even meat.
Yellow Recycle Bins
Recycling saves energy, cuts pollution by up to 25% and reduces the demand for water by half. It’s cheaper to recycle than to create a product from scratch and protects the environment. Any paper, cardboard, magazines, milk and juice containers, aluminium and steel cans and trays, plastic containers, glass bottles and jars can be placed in the yellow recycle bins.
Red landfill Bins
Any rubbish that cannot be recycled or placed in compost bins goes into the red landfill bins.
All these bins are located in many places across the school.
Our sustainability team have been working hard talking to students at assemblies and in classrooms during morning homeroom to promote our waste management system.
