Senior School

From the Head of Senior School

Welcome to Term Two! This is always a big term for Senior School with all year groups sitting their first round of examinations for the year and our Year Twelve students sitting their Externally Set Tasks (ESTs) from SCSA in all of their General courses. Along with the revision programs and Academic Support sessions that we run here at school, another way in which we are supporting our students this year is by engaging a team from Elevate to work with our Year Eleven students.  Elevate pride themselves on employing young, dynamic presenters who endeavour to make connections with the group they are working with and leave every participant with something to take away with them. They ran their first session on the last day of term and I was interested to see how they would tackle our weary Year Eleven students.  The team from Elevate were great!  They worked with our students to give them some very practical ideas around how to study and how to manage their time effectively.  On the feedback forms, every student said that they would recommend this program to other students, that the session was time well spent and that it was useful to have a young presenter.  Here are some other comments made by the students:

  • ‘Very informative, different to other presentations.’
  • ‘I rate the program highly, there’s a lot of useful information.’
  • ‘Really good and helpful to get new tips and tricks.  The booklet was really helpful and went over the new things.  It will help me study and get better grades.’
  • ‘I thought it was very good, well presented.’

The team from Elevate will be back this term, hopefully in person, to run a second session with our students.  We have also engaged them to work with our Year Nine students this term.

While the Government is encouraging us to run our regular programs at schools, I am aware that COVID is still with us.  Please rest assured that we will work closely with students and families impacted by COVID so that students achieve all they can this term.

If you have any concerns, please contact your Head of House or me.

From the School Captain, Ellie Slatter

This Monday 25 April I was privileged enough to be able to attend to Albany Dawn Service held at the Padre White Lookout, on Mount Clarence. We were shuttled off on a bus at 4:15am in the morning from the City of Albany and taken to the lookout where the service commenced.

The service was incredible with readings of journal entries from the war and readings in both English and Māori in a more intimate service due to COVID restrictions, and I was lucky enough to lay a wreath in remembrance of those who fought for their country and gave their lives.  This smaller crowd allowed for the service to feel like you were right there in the moment and made it a more heartfelt experience than other services I have attended. To top it all off was a beautiful sunrise across Ellen Cove to finish the service, which was enjoyed by all attendees.
