From the Principal

Term Two

Welcome back to Term Two.  Like many staff and students, I have been reinvigorated by a break away from the rigours of schooling.  The time away provides an opportunity to reenergise and focus on the upcoming term. Mandatory mask wearing at school will no longer be required by tomorrow.  This is a welcome change as students and staff have been wearing masks since early in Term One.  Although, while there is no longer mandatory mask wearing, students will not be discouraged from wearing masks at school.  Other changes include assembly, camps and off-site events resuming during the term.

ANZAC Day

Our Pipe Band played a significant role in the recent commemorative parade and Peace Park service with student representatives forming part of the march down York Street.  We are proud of the efforts and commitment of our Pipe Band who displayed not only their musical talents but their presentation and sense of occasion.  The School thanks Captain Michael Tugwell, as the Service Director, for his commitment to make this a special commemorative service for our community and students.  Commander David McPherson provided an insight into the history of HMAS Anzac and the important role that navy personnel played in Albany's history during wartime.  As a school, we continue to place the importance of ANZAC Day in the hearts and minds of the students we teach.

Elevate

Student engagement is one of our strategic actions and with feedback in recent parent surveys, the School is keen to optimise student learning through engagement.  With this in mind, it is pleasing to observe our Year Eleven students being guided through learning strategies through external provider Elevate.  This study skills program provides students with contemporary skills that can translate into the classroom.

Year Four Camp

With the easing of COVID restrictions, schools are now able to resume camps.  Under the direction of Mr Ken Raven and his staff, I am pleased that our Year Four students will be able to enjoy an overnight camp at Camp Quaranup.  To ensure the safety of students and staff, RATs will be undertaken on the morning of the camp and an updated COVID Safety Plan has been implemented.  This involved working closely with the camp providers.  Could I thank the Year Four parents for their support for this worthwhile initiative.  We wish our Year Four students an enjoyable experience.

The main entrance to Great Southern Grammar remains closed

Unfortunately, the road upgrade to the main entrance of the school is not yet complete, due to COVID impacting on contractors.  We anticipate this work being completed by the end of Week Two of the term.  In the meantime, the alternative pick up, drop off and bus arrangements which were implemented at the end of Term One will remain in place.  For our boarding families, please use the Gym access road and follow the road around the harbour side of the campus to the boarding precinct. This arrangement will remain in place for boarding families for the weekend of 30 April and 1 May 2022.
