Foundation

It is hard to believe that the Foundation students are completing their first term of school at the end of this week. Friday will be Day 45 as we count towards 100 Days of School!

So much learning has taken place in 45 days of school.

We have started on a journey to become self-managerscollaborators and  communicators in all aspects of our learning. We have become experts at following the morning routine as we ready ourselves for learning each day. We have learnt so much more about each other both inside and outside the classroom. We have spent time getting to know our buddies from Year 6 and the names of all staff. It definitely has been a busy term.

As Mathematicians, we have continued to learn about how we can collect data and make statements when constructing a picture graph. Last week Mrs. Monaghan visited us to find out what was our favourite ice-cream flavour. Chocolate was the most popular flavour and vanilla the least popular flavour. Also, we have learnt how to use our cards to play a game with a partner. We have been thinkers and problem solvers as we worked out how to order the cards from 1-10 and from 10-1. Lastly, we are becoming more confident when using the numbers names to match to numerals and collections. We just love learning about Mathematics in Foundation LW!

During our STEM session last week, Mr. Frazzetto gave us time and the opportunity to explore Lego Coding Express. It was fun to explore what components were in each tub. We experimented with creating a train track and building castles, planes, and picnic areas. Next term we look forward to using all facets of Coding Express to code the train using an Ipad and building the accompanying scenery.

Many thanks to the Foundation LW parents for all your support during a very busy introduction to school. It has been wonderful getting to know you, your children, and the grandparents this term.

Wishing everyone a Happy Easter and a safe and restful holiday break.

Looking forward to seeing everyone back at school on Tuesday 26th April for another fantastic term of learning.

Foundation Teacher

Year 1/2

It is hard to believe that it is already the end of Term 1! This term has gone by so quickly, and we are so proud of all the learning that has occurred in 1/2AM, 1/2AP and 1/2SC, despite the many changes and challenges thrown our way. It has certainly been a busy term, but we should all be commended for the resilience, respect, responsibility and determination we have shown, as well as the growth we have demonstrated as learners.

As inquirers, we continued going further with our art inquiry by engaging in the design process. We engaged in the thinking and planning stages of the design process where we collaborated in small groups to choose a place in Coburg and generate ideas about different art pieces we could create to represent that place over time. As thinkers, we listed all the materials we would need, and began sketching the design of our piece of art. Some of us chose to create 3D models and pop up art of places such as Pentridge, some of us chose to make a book that told the story of Coburg Lake and Coburg City Hall over time, and some of us painted our interpretations of Coburg Station, Moreland Station and our very own St Fidelis Primary School, both in the past and now. This week we will continue to work on our art pieces as we make improvements and add finishing touches. Here is a sneak peek of us working on our wonderful creations. Don’t forget to attend our Art Show to see the finished products! We look forward to seeing you all there.

As researchers, we continued to find out about these places by reading information on fact sheets and looking at pictures. As writers, we selected some facts about our chosen place and recorded these to include in the short descriptions that will accompany our piece of art. We will continue to work on these this week.

As people of faith, we continued to explore the stories of Holy Week. As curious thinkers, we shared some of our wonderings about Holy Thursday and the events that occurred the night before Jesus died. We considered the perspectives of others, as we engaged in the thinking routine ‘Step Inside’. As communicators, we identified how we think the disciples were feeling as Jesus shared his Last Supper with them and washed their feet, and shared what they might have been thinking or wondering. We continued to explore the Stations of the Cross, as we prepare for our whole school re-enactment this Friday. As designers, we all created a piece of art that represents our class station. Please join us for this in Hawthorn Yard at 9am, Friday 8th April.

Thank you for all of your support this term. We hope you all have a safe and happy Easter break with your loved ones, and we look forward to seeing you back at school for Term Two on Tuesday, 26th of April.

Year  3/4

We can’t believe Term 1 is finished this week! It is once again a busy week for students in Year 3/4.

Here are some important changes and events for this week:

Tuesday - This is our specialist day for this week. Students will have their normal Wednesday classes on Tuesday.  They will need to be in their sports uniform.  Specialist classes will revert to Wednesday for Term 2.

Friday -  For our last day students can choose to wear casual clothes with appropriate footwear for school. A gold coin donation towards the Queensland Floods and Ukraine is asked. Friday morning will also be our whole school Stations of the Cross which parents are welcome to attend.  It will begin in the schoolyard and finish at the church. Students are encouraged to bring a dressing robe to wear on top of their casual clothes as they are part of the audience during the performance. Students will finish school at 1pm.

Students are in full swing into their Inquiry action in creating a piece of art depicting an important event in Australia’s history. Topics include Ned KellyThe First FleetThe Stolen Generation and The Eureka Stockade.

We are concluding our investigation into measurement for Mathematics with reference to choosing correct units of measurement, estimating and measuring with accuracy and converting between units of measurement.

In Literacy, students are finishing writing persuasive texts and are reading a variety of texts to show their comprehension.

The Year 3/4 students have enjoyed participating in Intra School Sports this term.

We would like to congratulate all the Year 3/4 students and acknowledge the hard work and dedication they displayed this term. We wish you enjoy the holidays and we are looking forward to seeing you all in Term 2!

Year 5/6

What a great week of learning!  What a great term of learning!

This week the 5/6 students have been engaged in completing their art pieces for the up and coming Art Show in Term 2.  The students have been busy pasting, painting, modelling and writing a summary for their art piece.  They wrote about why they choose a particular social issue and where they found their inspiration.  Visiting the MACS Art Exhibition gave the students some wonderful and creative ideas.  We have included some images of art pieces that will be displayed in our Art Show.  Stay tuned!

In Religion, the students have been rehearsing and practising for the whole school Stations of the Cross on Friday at 9:00am.  After the excursion to St Patrick’s Cathedral, the students closely observed and studied the images of the Stations of the Cross.  They were inspired to sketch and design their favourite Station.  Many of these art pieces will also be displayed at our Art Show.

In Numeracy, the students are learning to measure the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. Some learning experiences were undertaken in our school grounds where students measured the perimeter of various shapes.  They are learning to convert units of measurements from mms, cms, ms and kms.

As part of our Resilience Project, the students have written their own definitions of Gratitude. The focus of this week was to be grateful for the things we have rather than the things we don’t have.  It has been terrific to see what the students are grateful for in their lives.  Some of the student responses were about being grateful for their friends, family, grandparents, pets and homes.

We would like to congratulate our 5/6 students for completing a wonderful term’s learning.

We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday break.
