A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL FAMILIES AND STUDENTS.

From the bottom of my heart, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all for welcoming me into the school community. I have had a wonderful term working with you all and getting to know each of you. I look forward to the next term and the exciting learning opportunities ahead.  Enjoy the holiday break.

As a school, we have the opportunity to enter the National Treasures Writing Competition 2022. I have spoken to the Year 3 to Year 6 students about this competition and they are very excited to enter.  Lots of students took home some information about the competition. I am also very excited about reading all of the entries.

The school will post any entries to the website on behalf of students, so all your child will need to do is eit   What's happening in our learning spaces?       drag_handle   more_vertDelete PageClone PageMove upMove downher share or email their entry to me when it is completed.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT - Leanne Wenckowski

Buddy Mass

Many thanks to all the families from Foundation and Year 6 who attended the Buddy Mass yesterday at 11am.

It was fantastic to see how excited the Foundation students were as they received their very own “Buddy Bear” from their Year 6 buddy. It was also great to see the parents interacting as they met each other.

Many thanks to all the school staff that attended the Mass and to Father Greg for being so welcoming and understanding.

Wishing everyone a restful and safe Easter and holiday break.

Expressions of Interest

In my role as Family Engagement Leader, I am thinking about beginning a 'Storytime Session' on a Monday afternoon between 2:30 pm and 3:30 pm for toddlers and pre-school children beginning in Term 2. We were set to begin this last year but then Covid hit and onsite events were cancelled.

A story would be read, followed by an activity for you and your child to complete together. There would also be an opportunity to borrow a book. It could be a wonderful opportunity to get to know each other.

If you think this may interest you, could you please send an email to:  lwenckowski@sfmoreland.catholic.edu.au with your details including the name and ages of your participating children.

ITALIAN NEWS - Rosa Fokianos

Hope everyone had un buon weekend and is now ready for the last week of Term 1 learning…can you believe that one term is almost coming to an end! Mamma mia!

I wonder if anyone went to the Melbourne Italian Festa yesterday?…I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to go, however, I did see an article on the news last night that Piazza Italia in Lygon St and part of Lygon St itself, was closed off to Italian market stalls including food and Italian merchandise, as well as Italian cars on display and lots of Italian colours everywhere!

If you were there yesterday and you took some photos, could you ask your parent/s if you could email me the photo/s that were taken at the Festa? I would then like to include the photos in next term’s newsletter. Grazie!

This week I would like to update you on what both the Grade 3/4 ‘s and Grade 5/6 ‘s have been learning about in italiano this term.

Firstly, both Grade 3/4 ‘s and Grade 5/6 ‘s, along with the rest of the school, have all started to learn how to say and do il Segno della Croce, (the Sign of the Cross), as well learning how to say la preghiera dell’ Ave Maria (the Hail Mary prayer) in italiano. The whole school will be reciting the Ave Maria during our school’s Stations of the Cross this venerdì (Friday). We have been practising each session but I have also asked if they could practise at home with the rest of the family. I have also included the words to the prayer below… Remember: Praying together can also be a special bonding time with everyone at home.

Grade 3/4 ‘s focus this term was practising everyday communication skills. We began with revising I Saluti, (greetings), including introductions. The children then asked each other Quanti anni hai? (How old are you?) Replying: Io ho ____ anni, (I am ____years old). They then recapped I Giorni della Settimana (Days of the Week) and I Mesi (The months), plus learning how to recite I numeri 1-31. This then led to asking Quando è il tuo compleanno? (When is it your birthday?) Replying: Il mio compleanno è… (My birthday is…). This question/answer strategy has hopefully helped the children gain confidence in their oracy skills and is an example of where language learning is used for communication.

The children will finish off the term by discussing Pasqua and explaining what Pasqua means to them and how they celebrate Easter at home, as well as learn how to wish everyone a Happy Easter in Italiano by saying Buona Pasqua!

Grade 5/6 ‘s focus for this term was to practise their communication skills with each other and gain confidence in public speaking. We used part of a language program called Avanti, which introduced various characters in a classroom setting. The program follows various experiences that the children in the class can relate to and replicate through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Through the various activities, they are also reinforcing their grammatical knowledge of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and personal pronouns as well as sentence structures. Ask your child/ren if they can tell you what “Io sono sempre in ritardo” means? 😊

We also covered work related to Pasqua and Via Crucis (The Stations of the Cross), which tied in nicely with the RE component that has been covered in their regular class as well. The children also watched short animated videos about Jesus’ last days (Holy Week), here they were also exposed to new vocabulary related to Gesu’ and Pasqua.

As you have read it has been a busy term and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and safe Easter holiday break (don’t eat too many chocolates!)  Buona Pasqua!
