Byrnes Shield Cricket Report

The Byrnes Shield CWWHS cricket competition is over for another year with Mater Dei Catholic College taking out the honours in 2020 against The Riverina Anglican College. The following games were played by TRAC throughout the competition:

Round 1 - The Riverina Anglican College (1/66) defeated Wagga Wagga High School (8/62) in 11 overs.

Round 2 - The Riverina Anglican College (5/159) defeated Kildare Catholic College (117) all out.

Semi Final - The Riverina Anglican College (2/64) defeated Wagga Wagga High School (63) all out. Joe Martin got a hat-trick and was presented with the game ball by Mr Humble.

Grand Final - Mater Dei Catholic College (3/164) defeated The Riverina Anglican College(8/121). MDCC won the toss and elected to bat, the boys battled hard to take wickets, with the MDCC team putting on an opening partnership of 137 which was always going to make the chase difficult for the boys. After a couple of missed opportunities by The Riverina Anglican College,  MDCC finished on 3-164, Luke Fellows bowled well to finish with figures of 2/22.

The captain, Sam McCready was promoted to open the innings after making scores of 55 and 34 not out in previous games and with a need to make quick runs. The boys never gave up and eventually ran out of overs, finishing on 8-121 after their 20 overs, with McCready making well compiled 48 runs and supported well by Joe Perryman (22) and Luke Fellows (25).

Although disappointed, the boys gave their all and should be very proud of their undefeated effort to make the final and the manner in which they played and conducted themselves in all games, well done boys!

Congratulations to all of the players for their participation in the Byrnes Shield team for 2020. Special mention to our Year 12 students who have been long-serving team members. Lastly, thanks to Mr Michael Reynolds for his dedication to coaching the team.

Katrina Powell Softball Report

The Katrina Powell CWWHS softball competition is over for another year with Mater Dei Catholic College taking out the honours in 2020 against Kooringal High School. The following games were played by TRAC throughout the competition:

Round 1 - Mater Dei Catholic College defeated The Riverina Anglican College 24 – 1

Round 2 - Wagga Wagga High School defeated The Riverina Anglican College 23 – 2

Playoff 3rd/4th - Wagga Wagga High defeated The Riverina Anglican College 19 - 2. We batted first and faced the quick pitching of Mikaylee Little. Samantha Klima was able to secure a walk to first base before Nell Malmo had an excellent two base hit to right-field. We then capitalised off a misfield by Wagga High to score a run before three outs sent us into the field. Nell Malmo commenced as pitcher and put in a fantastic effort. Wagga High had a succession of large hits and quick base running which scored them 9 runs before Maddy Angel wrapped up the innings with a catch at shortstop. We went into bat again but an automatic out and some excellent fielding from Wagga High’s Isabella Weir prevented us from scoring. Maddy Angel took on the role of pitcher this innings and put in a great effort for her first time in this role. Wagga High were quickly able to get on base but some great plays between catcher Samantha Klima and Nell Malmo and Lara Jay at third and first base respectively sent Wagga High back into the field. At the end of the second innings the score was WWHS 13 – The Riverina Anglican College 1. In the third and fourth innings, we were unable to get runners on base but unfortunately weren’t able to score. Wagga High continued to bat well but found the runs they were able to score being reduced due to some excellent fielding from The Riverina Anglican College including a magnificent catch at left field by Aisha Farah. When time and game was called, the final score was WWHS 19 – The Riverina Anglican College 1.

Congratulations to the girls on their efforts throughout the competition. Many members had no previous experience playing softball and all members took on unfamiliar roles with courage and enthusiasm. Thank you to our scorer and cheer-squad leader Mrs Judith Cottee, and thank you to all staff and family members who supported the team throughout the competition.

Thank you to Miss Belinda Siebert for her dedication to coaching the team.

College Athletics Carnival 2020

On Friday 13th March, the College will participate in the annual athletics carnival held at Jubilee Athletics Track. Students have received permission notes and are asked to fill in the slip at the bottom if they require transport to and from school. Students are encouraged to participate in the day to the best of their ability and wear red, blue, yellow or green colours to indicate what House Group they belong to and show support. If any student has an injury or illness, please provide a note excusing them from physically participating and I will assign a serviced based duty for the day. Service awards will be provided at the carnival. Remember the day serves many purposes; raise House spirit, sporting competition, enjoyable participation, development of team work, service to others and the ongoing development of student/staff comradery. A representative team to compete at BISSA will be created after the results of the events are compiled.

Upcoming CWWHS Sporting Events

The Hardy Shield Rugby League, Tracey Gunson Netball, Bill Turner Cup Soccer and Carroll Cup AFL teams are the next upcoming competitions on our busy sporting calendar. It is great to see so much interest in these sports. Our dedicated coaches and managers that are leading these teams are impressed with the level of talent we have to choose from at The Riverina Anglican College. Once team selections have been finalised, the teams will begin training and making strategic preparations for their competitions. When each draw is finalised they will be displayed on the sports noticeboard in the College Gym.

CIS Nominations

Please ensure that you frequently visit the CIS website (www.cis.nsw.edu.au) to see when nominations are due and events are scheduled. It is up to the individual student to see me to arrange his/her nomination a week before the nomination is due to allow sufficient time to complete the nomination.
