National Gallery

On the 31st of October, 7 D1 went to the National Gallery of Victoria to view the International and Australian collection of past to present artworks from different cultures and art styles.

Miss Wilkins introduced us to various works from the 12th century to the 18th century in the European section.  We then went to the Asian and south American section and saw different sculptures and 2D artworks that were made between 1150-1200 BC and we could compare what was happening at the same time in art across the world and how different the cultures were.

After that, we went to the 19th to 20th century and Miss Wilkins explained that an artist could now paint everyday people objects or landscapes in their work not just religious or the wealthy.

Before we stopped for lunch we looked at the semi abstract painting  ‘Weeping Woman’ by Pablo Picasso. Why did we look at the Picasso painting? We looked at this because it showed us how artists had really broken free from being told what to make.

Then we walked to Federation Square and had lunch for an hour. After lunch we   went up to the 3rd floor in the Ian Potter Gallery and saw Indigenous paintings and sculptures. Each student selected their favourite two works and completed the questions on the handout provided.

We had to find the correct labelled information and describe the work and how they used the elements and principles. In most of the works they had repeated pattern, shapes and lots of coloured dots.

A lot of students liked the ‘I’m Not Sorry’ painting made out of dots like a colour blindness test. We also looked at a painting of two frogs, when we stood close to the painting it looked 2 D and then we stood back and it looked3D.

It was a very good day!

Portraiture

The purpose of this assessment is learn about the proportions of the face and figure drawing.  Students should be able to convey their identity through the use of symbols and identify how culture, history and identity are conveyed through the portraits of others

Skills that should be demonstrated are:

  • Annotation of a Portrait or a range of portraits that convey culture, history and identity
  • Thinking of how artworks could be viewed by a range of different audiences
  • Proportions of the face and how to add detail to the facial features
  • Evaluation of Artworks and Process

As a Year 8, student in Ms. Wilkins art class, I really enjoyed this semester because I was introduced to portraiture and was able to introduce colour rendering to my drawing techniques. The portrait of Katy Perry was an observational drawing of a photograph.

What a busy year in the Library!

This has an incredibly busy year in the Kings Park Library.

We have made over 14 000 loans of books and DVDs to staff and students, introduced a range of new digital products including eBooks, digital newspapers and digital videos as well as running a number of very successful programs for students.

We had 32 students successfully complete the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge.  Our Reading Club was very popular with 95 students joining and 45 of them attending our Christmas Party to celebrate the end of the year and each receive a book.  One lucky student, Amy Nhan of 7D1 was the winner of a $25 Dymocks voucher.

This year we are again running the Summer Reading program to encourage students to read over the break. We are also offering our biggest ever prize - a box set of books  chosen by the winner to the value of $200 - in our ePlatform competition. To enter this, students need to grab an entry form from the Library and read an eBook, or listen to an audiobook over the break.

As an end of year incentive we gave all students the chance to win a prize pack of books by either joining Summer Reading or returning all of their books. Congratulations to Elizabeth Douglas, Christine Phan and Vikki Vo who each received a prize.

The Library Staff would like to wish all of our students and their families a safe and happy summer break,  with lots of opportunities for reading!

Calabria Club

On Tuesday 5 December, all the Italian classes including: 7L3, 7L4 & 7D3 attended an excursion to the Italian Calabria Club. We were lucky enough to have a group of elderly people volunteer their time to teach us about Italian culture and entertain us.

We learnt how to make pasta which was fun and easy. We partici[ated in activities such as botche (Italian lawn bowls) dancing (we learnt how to dance the Tarantella). They taught us an italian card game called Scopa and lastly, we went on a little walk around the club and learnt about the culture and history around the club.

Unfortunately, the ground was too wet to play soccer but we had a good time anyway.

One of the highlights of the day was the 3-course meal which included: pasta, pizza and soft drink. As for desserts, we were served delcious tasting gelato. Everyone definitely had a great time and we all lft with smiles on our faces, It was a wonderful opportunity to go there and experience what we experienced. We would like to thank Mrs Powell for rganising this excursion and we hope there willbew a lot more experiences like this.
