Delahey News

From the Delahey Principals

As 2017 comes to a close it is time to reflect on what has been yet another busy year.  Students enter their final two years of schooling at the Delahey campus and think it will take forever to end.  We tell them to enjoy the moment as it will fly by.  It isn’t until the end, when we celebrate with the graduating year 12 students, that the conversations start to turn a little gloomy.  The realisation of not seeing friends every day sets in.  The teachers that they see as people that have been crucial in their learning and in VCE they have made strong bonds which will no longer be there to check in and push them harder.  The big wide world awaits and it is time to step up and be adult.  Our 2017 cohort are a wonderful bunch of dedicated students.  There were nerves going into the VCE English exam and nothing but relief after three hours. Exams had begun and the Copperfield students were well and truly primed to do their best.  Teachers thoroughly prepared the students throughout the last three weeks of their classes with time dedicated to only revision.  It was wonderful to see so many students actively seeking out teachers to get some one on one tutoring to gain those extra couple of marks.  As the results’ date approaches so do the nerves for students, parents and staff….after all we only want the best for “our” kids.

The Year 12 Formal was held at Sheldon Receptions on what was a very hot night.  Both boys and girls looked magnificent and it was clear the time spent enjoying the tradition of “getting ready” was alive and well.  As I roamed the room and had conversations with students it was very clear the solid friendships they have formed over the years at Copperfield College.  Iphones were out and selfies being taken every second.  Students took the opportunity to record some memories to take into their next life.  The photo booth was a great hit with both staff and students enjoying the chance to be a little silly.  Dancing, dancing and more dancing was only stopped when students needed to gain a cooler spot in the foyer but it didn’t take long to join in the dancing again.  It was a wonderful farewell and as usual, our students’ behaviour was impeccable.

Over the past four weeks, the Delahey campus has been focussing on transition.  It is vital that we give our students every opportunity to be up with those from other schools.  Transition isn’t just a tour of the new campus and having some fun, it is back to the books for some serious work.  Year 11 and 12 students have begun their 2018 work.  VCE students will have homework that must be completed by the first day back next year.  It is visible to parents and students on Compass. All English students need to read their novels for the first time over the Christmas period.  Read them for enjoyment this time; setting aside a little time each day to some reading and will help with being prepared for day one.

Year 12 VCAL students were privileged to have mentors from Work Place Connect (WPC) teach them about the realities of presenting for interviews, at work places and how to make themselves noticed for the right reasons in a week long Boot Camp.  This culminated in a ceremony presenting highly

Award recipients: Jordan, Lynn, Donny, Mohamed, Naba  and Mary Chiodo with past students Van and Jazmine and WPC staff

performing students with awards; it also included two special guests who were past students of Copperfield talking about their successful journeys into the world of work and training since doing VCAL.

The Year 11s’ VCAL transition week ended in a mini presentation of the educational toys they designed and mocked up.  This was a challenging and confronting task for many but demonstrated the level of commitment and responsibility VCAL requires; so was an excellent transition activity.

Ms Griffiths and I have had a wonderful year in our first year as a team at Delahey. We thank the Delahey leadership team and all staff for their dedication and tireless work.  Copperfield students are very lucky to have the teachers they have.  We wish all our families a safe and restful holiday and look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready to take on 2018.

Yr.11 Fit to Drive Incursion

Yr.11 VCE/VCAL students attended an incursion on road safety, which focused on developing an awareness and a respect for safe road use. This program supports young road users and helps educate and build awareness when faced with risky driving situations, both as passengers, and in terms of future driving safety. Guest speakers from Victoria Police and the Melbourne Fire Brigade shared their experiences and provided opportunities for interaction and used scenarios and discussion on road safety. The overall purpose of the Fit to Drive program is to reduce youth road trauma. The Year 11 and 12 Coastal Experience Camp

Here are some photos I took on the Year 11 and 12 Coastal Experience Camp last week.  The weather was very kind to us and we spent some time in several idyllic natural coastal environments with knowledgeable guides expanding our understanding of the creatures, plants and algae which make those coastal places their homes.
