Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad Competition

Each year, students from Year 5 and Year 6 are entered as a team into the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad (APSMO) competition.  In previous years, the BNPS teams have competed against other schools within Australia and New Zealand. In 2020, however, the Maths Olympiads have become intra-school competitions in which an individual student’s performance is only measured against other students from within their own school. This change has ensured that the programs remain inclusive and allow all schools to participate, regardless of their circumstances.

On Wednesday 6 May, 10 Year 5 students and 20 Year 6 students, completed their first APSMO contest which comprised of 5 ‘Games’ questions and 5 ‘Olympiad’ questions.  They organised themselves at home in test conditions, with 30 minutes for each of the tests.

The students’ parents took photographs of their answers and emailed them to the school office.  With Nurse Nicole’s help in coordinating the emails to and from the 30 families, the answers were collected for correction. All results have been submitted to APSMO and will be included in a progressive score for each student. There will be 4 more contests throughout Term 2 and Term 3 and at the conclusion of the competition we will have an award presentation late in Term 4.

Thanks again to Nicole for all her help with communication, and to the students and parents who contributed to the implementation of the first successful remote Olympiad contest! We are so pleased that we have been able to provide this opportunity for the team, despite the unusual circumstances of not being at school.

Good luck to all participants for the remainder of the competition!
