Numeracy

Paul Colvin - Numeracy Coordinator

St John’s is again this year offering a number of extension programs to our students, some of which have or will start very soon. They include:

Accelerated Mathematics Program- This program commenced a couple of years ago and will continue to help students who excel at mathematics, ultimately giving them the chance to start a VCE Maths subject whilst still in Year 10.

STEM High Achievers- These are programs that are run in conjunction with the CSIRO. A number of these programs will run this year including, Lego Robotics for years 7 and 8, as well as Medical Problem Solving for year 10’s. These programs involve STEM professionals coming from industry to work with St John’s students to give them an idea of the types of careers that can lead on from studying STEM subjects.

VCE Mathematics Presentation- This is aimed at students studying a Year 12 maths subject. This year, David, who is a former VCAA Curriculum Manager, has agreed to work with our students to give them tips and tricks for how to complete their studies and exams so that they can achieve their best.

Raising Rarity- This is a new program that will see the College cooperate with the Royal Botanic Gardens and work with a small group of students being trained in how to raise and cultivate Rare and Endangered plants species in order to increase numbers of these disappearing species and hopefully bring them back from the brink.
