MUSIC LEARNING AREA NEWS

It was fantastic to meet many of our new Year 7’s at our Instrumental Music Recruitment Session on Monday 13th February. Those in attendance were able to meet the instrumental staff and try out instruments they might be interested in learning.

Instrumental lessons have commenced for Year 7’s this week. Year 7’s will start rehearsing with their ensembles from next week (week starting Feb 27th).

Students have been placed in an ensemble based on their instrument and will either be a part of:

  • Year 7 Band (Tuesday lunchtime),
  • Guitar Ensemble (Wednesday lunchtime) OR
  • Choir (Thursday lunchtime).

Ensemble rehearsals will appear on student’s Compass timetable. If your child has not yet enrolled to learn an instrument, but is interested in lessons, please contact Mrs. Mechielsen, kirsty.mechielsen@education.vic.gov.au.

A reminder that Instrumental fees can now be paid through Compass. Please ensure these fees are paid by Friday 17th March. If a payment plan is required, please contact the General Office.

COLLEGE PRODUCTION – THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL!

Rehearsals officially began this week for our College Production of The SpongeBob Musical. I am very excited by the talent of our cast, particularly our ensemble as a whole, they are a passionate bunch and are going to be a powerhouse cast in 6 months when our show season begins! Keep an eye out for when tickets go on sale and come and support our wonderfully talented students.

Language Learning Area News

What a great start to the year for our French students. Our students have been learning a great amount of new vocabulary and have been demonstrating in their own ways, what they have learned.

Our Year 8 students have been learning how to tell the time and have just started the theme of Food, particularly breakfast food. This Term, the Year 8 students will be learning about the broader topic of French food, the name of meals and ingredients, as well as comparing the French food culture to the Australia food culture. The students are learning how to share what they eat during the day, as well.

Getting students involved in activity based learning is an excellent way for students to engage in their learning, which is what we did when students were learning to tell the time in French, like in the picture here. The students are playing a game of Train/Domino to help them identify and practice reading the time in French, with this game, the students also practice their translation skills and their pronunciation, as they need to ask their peers who has a specific card.

Our brand new Year 7s have learned how to greet others and introduce themselves. The students have been working together in groups to create little plays using a mixture of the French words we have learned as well as some English words for their play to have body. The students have acted out their plays in front of the class, see some pictures attached. The Year 7s are able to follow a range of instructions in French and have a great routine when we start and finish the class.

Our French students should be very proud of what they have already achieved so early in the year. In a world where more people are multi-lingual, learning another language is more important than ever. Well done to all students for getting involved in learning French!

Art Club at the HILL

The Wheelers Art Club was a success last year and we are continuing this wonderful extra-curricular activity in 2023. Lillian Kleinman who initiated the forming of the club in 2022 will continue to lead this great initiative again.

The Wheelers Art Club is formed to provide a safe creative space for those who want to create their own art outside of the classroom curriculum. In the one hour session, students are encouraged to explore and experiment with their ideas using a variety of mediums and techniques that they would like to experience.

In our Art and Technology Show last year, we included the Art Club Wall where we showcased some of the artworks created throughout the year. It was an impressive collection and was a good talking point for those who attended.

We encourage every student in the school to join us in the fun every Wednesday after school from 3-4pm. Students who are interested can contact Lillian Kleinman at KLE0003@whsc.vic.edu.auor speak to Mr. Razaai, or just turn up on when the session is on in A01.

We are looking forward to more inspiring work from creative students in 2023!
