Junior School News

Prep 1 & 2

Dear Families,

It's been such busy few weeks  at school between colour runs and Police incursions. We are so proud of how resilient the students have been. We would like to reiterate Mr. Collis' message that we fully support 'circuit breakers ' if you feel your child would benefit from some time to rest.

Colour Run

Huge congratulations to all the students and parents who raised money and took part in our colour run last Friday. Hats off to Pamela Moore and Dara Blake for organising such a fun day!

Shrove Tuesday

Police Visit

On Thursday the Junior school had a visit from Officer's Tilly and Eddie from Moorabbin Police Station. We learned how  Police help the community, 'stranger danger' and how to call 000. They gave us a tour of their police car and even let us try on some uniforms!

(And if you're wondering parents - yes, your children felt the need to tell Officer's Tilly and Eddie about all your speeding tickets and other indiscretions. There's no secrets in the Junior school!)

Respectful Relationships Open Day

On Monday March 20th Parents are invited to join classes for their Respectful Relationships lessons @2:30 to celebrate Harmony Day. Further communication will be sent closer to the time.

Prep News

Yay! We have just finished our first full week of school!

In our MSL block we have commenced a daily literacy group. Each day students had a targeted focus on; initial sounds, letter formation, sound/ letter combinations and explicit, small group teaching of sounds and words. We are just so impressed with the progress they are making!

In Writing (TWR) we are learning about nouns. We know that a noun is a word that names a person, an animal, a place or a thing. We sorted pictures of nouns under these headings. We identified nouns in sentences and formulated sentences of our own, ensuring they:

1. had a noun (who/ what)

2. had a 'what doing' word

3. checked that their sentence 'made sense'.

For example, in the sentence 'The boy is skipping', 'boy' is the noun and 'skipping' is the 'what doing' word.

In Maths we are  learning to sequence times of days and identify activities associated with the morning, afternoon, evening and night. To consolidate this, students sequenced baby bears day.

We love Sport with Mr. Brown on Wednesdays!

Year One

In reading our Year One's are practicing fluency as part of the morning MSL block. We are working on our ability to read with speed, accuracy and proper expression. This is also the focus with take home readers this term, so please keep this in mind when reading with your child at home.

During our Writing  Revolution Programme (TWR) we are exploring words that modify nouns (adjectives). We used our senses to describe lollies and were lucky enough to eat them when the task was over!

Sequencing days of the week and months of the year has been our focus in Maths this week. We have been starting at different points to determine what days and months come before/ after. Calendar work has also become a focus during our morning routine.

Year Two

Year Two's are focusing on handwriting and reading fluceny in our MSL block. We use this rhyme when writing letters; "my name is  'x',  my sound is 'x'".

In Maths we finalised our place value unit for this term by making 'place value monsters' using hundreds, tens and ones. We then found the total value of our monsters. We began our first Measurement and Geometry topic for this semester; Time. We made our own clocks with moving hands to practice telling time to o'clock, half past and quarter past.

We further explored members of our community who help keep us safe and healthy in our Topic unit.

We even managed to squeeze buddies, storytimes and some read to self into our jam- packed days.
