Netball Academy

Respect - Responsibility - Personal Best - Community

If you are looking for the perfect display of our school values, then look no further than our Cheltenham Netball Academy team and be sure to include resilience and a never give up attitude.

Registration for the Netball Academy team into the Waverley International Schools Tournament came with much trepidation. The competition would be tough, maybe too tough for our young group who in years 7 and 8 would be at the lowest end of the junior age bracket. Experienced teams travelling from Tenison Woods and Scotch College in South Australia and Victorian Sports Academy Schools such as Rowville and Maribyrnong would be bringing their absolute best players and likely dominate the competition.

Unlike other school academies who offer scholarships to excel and create elite teams, the Chelt Sports Academy is designed to encourage students to be involved in and play sport, challenge skills and bring like minded students together. The Netball Academy girls have been training together once a week in an interrupted Term 2 and had never played a game as a united team, until this event.

On the First Tuesday of the school holidays, at the opening game of the 4 day competition, the girls were instructed by coach Leah to, at all times, ignore the scoreboard. Our goal entering this competition was not to win games but to win moments. Encouraged to follow the code of the Chelt Academy and learn the game, improve on self and team skills and give everything your best shot and didn't the girls do just that!

Throughout the tournament Cheltenham showed consistent improvement and above all consistent effort. When the scoreboard showed a convincing defeat our girls held their heads high and found the silver lining in every match, when bodies were tired and lacking match fitness our girls pushed on. When skills were challenged by the very strong

competition our girls went harder at the ball and took any opportunity they could. When a teammate succeeded the girls cheered each other on. By day 3 and 4 The little team from Cheltenham were being referred to by the umpires as the team that just doesn’t give up.

They didn’t win games but they certainly won moments and plenty of them to be proud of. The improvement of individual skills and the team dynamic was to be commended. To show up each and every day when you knew that you will be up against it and constantly give everything you have on the court is an achievement all on its own. If there were medals for this, Chelt girls would be wearing gold.

Basketball Academy

Our Basketball Academy has struggled for consistent numbers this year which has made competing difficult. We thank the non-academy students who have helped when needed to ensure our school colours can take to the courts. Our entries into the Basketball Victoria Championship Cup were very few compared to other schools however our Under 17 Boys and Under 15 Boys were put to the test with some very challenging competition.

Our Academy team, training once a week, got a first hand look at just what it takes to be an elite player and a united team. Congratulations to the boys for their work ethic and attitude on the day. If you ask any of them I'm sure they all preferred playing basketball (no matter the score) to working at school. We look forward to the coming weeks as the boys will begin strength conditioning and personal training with the Academy Coaches...How do you feel about yoga?

Thanks Mr Smart for putting together a girls team at short notice, we hope that the team enjoyed the opportunity to play and are ready and warmed up for Interschool Basketball next week.
