Sovereign Hill

Sovereign Hill

On Wednesday, June 1st the Year 3/4 students visited Sovereign Hill. This excursion was to support our learning in our Integrated Studies unit 'Local Cultures and Celebrations'. The excursion followed on nicely from our visit by Jane Marini talking about Indigenous Culture by exploring how Ballarat has changed over time. Students visited the Education Centre to learn about the reasons why people came to Ballarat, even before gold was discovered. We travelled through time starting with the diggings then the establishment of shops on Main Street, followed by the row of houses and steam-powered boiler engines for the mines. Students explored the Chinese settlement and visited the Chinese Temple, went panning for gold and tried their luck at the bowling alley. Despite the chilly weather, it was a fantastic day for all.
