The Merrylands High School Dance Ensemble consisting of 20 students from Years 7-12, represented the school at the regional ‘Synergy Dance Public Schools Festival’ at Penrith Panthers, Tuesday the 14th and Thursday the 16th of June.
The students took part in rehearsals on the stage and then performed in two shows, an Evening and a Matinee. The students worked hard throughout Term 1 and Term 2 during recesses and some lunchtimes, to learn choreography and be performance ready. The students performed an item ‘Artistry of the Fan’, a Japanese Fan Dance/Contemporary infused technical work, choreographed by Ms Dickie.
For some students it was their first performance in a professional environment and for Linda, Jessica and Taylah of Year 12, it was their last Synergy Dance. The girls did themselves and their school proud, they all embodied the Safe, Respectful, Learner ethos and we received outstanding feedback from other participating schools regarding their conduct and performance item. We’re looking forward to the next performance already!
Congratulations, dancers!
LEAP students are currently studying recycled water and its usage in everyday life. The students visited Warragamba Dam at Penrith and enjoyed the aesthetic beauty of the surrounding areas. They also gained knowledge about the infrastructure of the dam, how and why the Warragamba dam was built, and the catchment area. In addition, the students learned how the dam works and other historical facts about the Warragamba dam.

Six selected students from the LEAP faculty represented Merrylands High School in a bocce competition on the 6th of June. Bocce is played with eight large balls and one smaller target or object ball called a 'pallina'. There are four balls per team and they are made of a different color or pattern to distinguish the balls of one team from those of the other team. The students showed great sportsmanship and enjoyed the competition. The students competed against 13 other schools in the Sydney South West region. Overall, Merrylands High School came third and represented the school with pride.
Students from the LEAP faculty had an amazing opportunity to attend an inclusive sports day on the 12th of May at Sydney Olympic Park. The students explored sporting games in different ways to cater for people with disabilities. Some of the sports our students participated in included: wheelchair football, wheelchair basketball and a differentiated lawn bowls game. Students had an amazing day out and learnt many new skills to take back into their PE lessons.
