International Baccalaureatte

Written by Anne Farrugia

Dear Saltwater Community,

In our latest newsletter item, a range of texts were shared via a Padlet link. We hope that you have had the opportunity to share these stories together with your families and that your child/ren have continued to share their knowledge of the language associated with the attributes of the Learner Profile. We encourage families to continue to share and discuss the characters within the texts and to make connections with how the characters were displaying specific attributes of the Learner Profile. You can challenge your child/ren to also give reasoning by sharing why they might think this.

We would love to also see students taking action by sharing their connections made whilst reading these texts together with their families at home and sharing with their peers and teachers at school also.

As we approach Book Week, the students are encouraged to reflect upon their favourite texts and to bring these texts in to school to share with their peers. Book Day is also fast approaching. We will be celebrating Book Day as a Saltwater Community on Wednesday 31st August.

Students are asked to be reflective and think about the character they would like to come to school dressed as for Book Day and to give reasoning. Whilst giving reasoning, students can give detail about the attributes of the Learner Profile. An example of this might be 'Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge' was an inquirer because he asked a lot of questions to find information when he was unsure.

We value working in partnership with our Saltwater families and have loved hearing that our parent community are building their knowledge and are using the language associated with the IB Learner Profile at home with their child/ren. This really supports student understandings.

So, what are the attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile?

Inquirers

We nurture our curiosity, developing skills for inquiry and research. We know how to learn independently and with others. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.

Principled

We act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and justice, and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We take responsibility for our actions and their consequences.

Balanced

We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives — intellectual, physical, and emotional — to achieve well-being for ourselves and others. We recognise our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.

Knowledgeable

We develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance.

Open-minded

We critically appreciate our own cultures and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions of others. We seek and evaluate a range of points of view, and we are willing to grow from the experience.

Reflective

We thoughtfully consider the world and our own ideas and experience. We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

Thinkers

We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.

Caring

We show empathy, compassion and respect. We have a commitment to service, and we act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around us.

Communicators

We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

Risk-takers

We approach uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and cooperatively to explore new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient in the face of challenges and change.
