Dear Year One Families,
We are more than halfway through the term and students in Year One have been busy with their learning! The Year One students attended their first Drama lesson this year.
Unit of Inquiry
We are concluding our Unit of Inquiry, under the Transdisciplinary Theme, ‘Sharing the Planet’. Students have developed insightful wonderings, which allowed them to further engage in this inquiry. Wonderings are a great way to encourage agency in a child’s learning and support them to conduct research to find the answers. Students have been inquiring into, ‘Endangered Species’, where students have researched the reasons why animals are becoming endangered.
We are also looking forward to exploring our new Unit of Inquiry where students will be watching the movie, ‘Charlotte’s Web’, as a provocation. We will be discussing how foods under go a process before we find them at the supermarket.
Reading
We have been working on developing students’ comprehension strategies to understand a story in more depth. We have been focusing on inferring, where students have been using their prior knowledge and clues from the text to infer a character’s feelings and what is happening in a text. Students have looked at a range of pictures, short clips and texts to infer.
Students have also been practising their rate, expression and phrasing by reading a range Reader’s Theatre scripts.
Writing
During Writing, students have been continuing to write persuasive texts using emotive language and reasons to persuade their audience. Students took on the persona of an endangered animal and wrote a letter that persuade humans to help the animals from becoming endangered. Students continue to practise forming their letters using both upper- and lower-case letters on the dotted thirds, using capital letters correctly and ending a sentence with a full stop.
Mathematics
During Maths, this last fortnight, students have continued to consolidate their learning about subtraction. Students have been exposed to a variety of worded problems and used strategies such as counting back, using a number line, writing a number sentence and using tens frame to solve subtraction problems. It has been great to see how students are using at least three strategies to solve their problems. We have continued fluid grouping as this provides students with the opportunity to work towards their individual learning goals in groups with students of a similar need. Students have been engaged during these lessons.
