UNSHAKEABLE FoundationS for the faltering

‘Find rest O my soul in God alone…... God is my mighty rock, my refuge……pour out your hearts to him.’  Psalm 62 (from verses 5, 7 & 8)

Yesterday I watched a semi-trailer pour countless loads of road base onto the site of the new staff carpark. Last week the concrete guttering was poured and the site steamrolled.  For weeks prior the site looked more like an archaeological dig than a suburban block as drainage and sumps were installed deep in the ground.  Soon to be completed, all we’ll mostly see in this carpark is a fresh coat of black bitumen with a few stripes.  Yet without the foundation it would soon falter.

Psalm 62 uses picture language to refer to God.  It calls God ‘my rock and my salvation’, an ‘almighty rock, my refuge’ and ‘my fortress’.  This kind of imagery is common in Scripture (see Psalm 46 for example and Jesus’ own teaching in Matthew 7:24-27).  Rocks – from which fortresses can both be carved or set upon – have deep solid foundations.  This allows them to provide a place of stability and refuge in the tumults of life – be they natural or human phenomena.  It all adds up to being an apt picture of God.

Why? As the washouts of life happen, the floods of sickness or death rise, the storms of broken relationships pelt or the attacks of anxiety undermine, life in God our rock and fortress offers us God’s rest, strength and love.  It’s a foundation that does not falter.  Yes, trials will remain, but ‘I will not be shaken’ (Psalm 62:6b).

Faith Talk Question

What is your foundation and how well is it working??

Prayer

Thank you, Lord God, that you offer us a rock and a fortress, a refuge for our souls.  Keep us alive in your unshakeable love.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
