Young Authors' Program

Young Authors Program – Workshop 1

On Thursday we had the first workshop of the Young Authors’ Program for 2023. It was an astounding experience to participate in and allowed us to meet some incredible authors and screenwriters!

Paige’s workshop was about the future, climate change and pollution. She wrote a colourful book called Brave Maeve about making a change to the environment. After reading it, we had to write about what would happen in the future if we never took action or if we noticed our mistakes, took action and made an impact.

Lou and John’s session was about the present. They wrote the script for a show on ABC ME called The PM’s Daughter. We learned about screenwriting and we even had a go ourselves. We had to describe where we were, the time, a character, an action and use dialogue.

Miss Skrobalak and Linda from Pleasant st Primary School focused on the past, present and future. They described a forest and we were asked to close our eyes and imagine. Then we would write a few sentences about each aspect within the forest. Afterwards, there were pictures of places and characters for us to choose from to begin a story about it of our choice.

Tamara's group took us to the Historical Society which once was Sebastopol Primary School. Here we met Brian and Sue who showed us around and told us stories of the past. They allowed us to use the ink pens and explained many of the differences between school now and then. In this session we wrote, putting ourselves into a classroom of the 1800s.

We look forward to updating you about Workshop 2 - taking place in Bunninyong in Week 6.
