Professional Learning Community 1 (Grade 1)

Welcome to Term 3!!

We wanted to congratulate the Grade 1 students on an amazing semester 1 and working so hard to learn new skills.

Our students have made an amazing start to Term 3. This term we have begun looking at fantasy creatures and fairy tales.

Students are now going to write a description of a mermaid, unicorn or dragon, before re-writing 'Jack and the Beanstalk'.

In Numeracy we have been exploring different skip counting patterns and are about to look into capacity. Something you can do at home to support this is cooking different recipes and measuring the ingredients.

We remind students that we should be reading every night to consolidate their skills. We are looking forward to an amazing second half of the year.

Hello Parents/Carers,

Our PLC3 camp will be here before we know it! It’s in a month’s time on Thursday 24th August to Friday 25th August. It will be for one night and all information is on Compass.  Details about your child will need to be filled out asap, especially any medication students will require for the two days and one night.

Cost: $154.00, due by Friday, 11 August 2023

Consent: Required, due by Friday, 11 August 2023

This week in Literacy students will be researching information about a famous person using different texts from the ‘Little People, Big Dreams’ series. Then they will write their own biography focusing on such things as their Early Life, Interests and what they would like to be Famous for. We are very excited to read how our students might want to find fame; they could be a scientist, author, firefighter or AFL player!

In Project Based Learning our budding scientists are investigating matter: solids, liquids and gases. Students will record their understandings of what happens to objects when they are exposed to heat, cool or frozen temperatures. The photos below show the objects in plastic bags with students recording their findings before heat or frozen temperatures are applied to water, cordial, milk, oil, honey and chocolate.

This week in Numeracy we will practise strategies to help solve multiplication and division problems. Drawing what a question ‘looks like’ is important so that students can visualise possible answers. Some strategies they may use are as an array, groups of, times as many, number lines and utilising their fact family knowledge.

Have a wonderful week!

Professional Learning Community 4 (Grade 4)

What a cold and wintery time we are having at the moment! And with this cold weather, comes jumpers and jackets. Please remember to have these labelled, as we can take them off and they can get misplaced.

In Literacy over the week, we are focussing on predicting in reading and how our predictions change as we get more information and in writing we are using DRAGONS as our theme and completing a description and narrative. This has been extremely fun as we have drawn our dragons and are writing from the dragons’ perspective.

In Numeracy, we are making the link between multiplication and division. Using strategies such as halving for dividing by 2, 4 (half, half) and 8 (half, half, half). And also using our multiplication strategies to help answer division problems.

We hope you all have a lovely rest of the week and next week as well.

Regards,

Professional Learning Community 5 (Grade 5)

We are delighted to share with you the exciting news about the fantastic start our Grade 5 students have had to Term 3. They have truly hit the ground running and are making remarkable progress in various areas of their education.

In the realm of Reading, our students have embarked on an engaging journey through Book Clubs. These Book Clubs provide them with the opportunity to choose a book of their liking and read it in groups. They then analyse what they have read and gather weekly to discuss their individual perspectives and wonderings. This collaborative approach allows the students to engage in debates, learn from one another, and share their unique ideas.

Moving on to Writing, our Grade 5s have been honing their skills in descriptive writing. They have been focusing on painting vivid pictures with words, particularly when describing a winter's day. The vocabulary and descriptive prowess displayed by the students have been truly outstanding. Additionally, they have also been crafting descriptive narratives based on the inspiring concept that anyone can be a hero. Their creativity and storytelling abilities have truly flourished.

In the realm of Numeracy, our students have been delving into the fascinating world of fractions and decimals. They have been working diligently to understand these concepts and apply them in various problem-solving situations. In the coming weeks, we will be progressing to the topic of percentages, further expanding their mathematical skills.

We are also thrilled to announce the successful launch of the Boys' Program. The breakfast launch was a resounding success, and we are excited to see how this program will continue to benefit our male students. The Boys' Program aims to provide a nurturing and supportive environment where our boys can develop and grow, both academically and personally.

Professional Learning Community 6 (Grade 6)

Dear Grade 6 Parents and Carers,

We are thrilled to have everyone back from the mid-year break and eager to get back into learning. We would like to extend our gratitude to all those who attended the parent-teacher interviews. Your continued support in your child's education is invaluable.

In Literacy, students have been exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, including language from Wadawurrung Peoples as part of our NAIDOC week celebrations. They've been inspired by texts written by Indigenous authors, focusing on themes like connection to Country to enhance their own writing, complemented with processes of creating complimentary illustrations for their narratives. In Reading, students are learning to efficiently extract new information from non-fiction texts, developing strong research and learning skills.

Numeracy has seen dedicated efforts in applying their understanding of fractions in various ways such as simplifying, adding and subtracting and soon converting them to decimals and percentages.

We are excited to be exploring matter with the students and how it can change states in Science.

To help prepare our Grade 6 cohort for next year, the Passport to Success program started last week. This program will help to empower the students for a smooth transition from primary school to high school.

Our Boys' Program has once again kicked off with enthusiasm, with activities like Muay Thai and an opening breakfast already having been held. We pass on our thanks to Mrs. Richardson and Miss McCutcheon for organising such an exciting and valuable program.

With your continued support, we're looking forward to another successful term and excited to see how much the students can achieve in Term 3

Warm regards,

PLC 6
