Grade 5&6 Nutrition Day

2023 Grade 5&6 Health Day – Nutrition

In the second last week of Term 2 all of Grade 5&6 students took part in a Health Day of which the focus was on nutrition. Over the course of the day the students were learning about the five food groups, everyday foods and sometime foods, designing a healthy lunchbox, evaluating their food intake for a typical day, creating a nutritious and tasty sandwich, discussing the importance of water and analysing the nutritional value of a variety of drinks, focusing particularly on levels of sugar.  Here is a little sample from the day.

We learnt that there is a lot of sugar in drinks.  I was interested in also learning about the amount of sugar in food.  I enjoyed making my sandwich of which I included all of the ingredients – ham, cheese, carrot, tomato, cucumber, capsicum, beetroot and lettuce.

We learnt that eating nutritious food will help us with our overall health and what foods are nutritious.  I found it interesting that we can eat all foods but some have greater nutrition. My favourite part of the day was making our own sandwich.

On the day we had to evaluate our food we had eaten and create a perfect lunchbox.  I learnt about how much sugar is in different foods. Making the sandwiches was fun.

Jasper

We learnt about the categories of foods and how they fit into food groups.  I  enjoyed making a nutritious lunchbox, particularly our lunch which was a sandwich.

We learnt about the foods we should eat for a balanced diet.   We found it interesting that even though food packaging sends a message that they are healthy sometimes they are not.  Making our own sandwiches was fun along with measuring the actual amount of sugar in drinks.
