Year 3 - 6 Community

August / September 2023

There is so much going on in the 3 to 6 community and most of the input is from the students themselves so please read their work and find out what life and learning is like across our 3 to 6 communities.

Prep/Year 6 Buddies

I love going to see the Preps. They get so excited to see us. My buddy is Sophia and I help her with her learning. We focus on her reading, mostly. We share a love of footy and coloured in a football picture. I like the time we spend with the Preps because they are fun and it's nice to help out. It's also nice when I see the preps out in the yard because they're fun to be around and I already know them.

During our first Prep/Grade 6 Buddy session of the term, we completed a NAIDOC Week activity with our Prep buddies. We coloured in a boomerang and drew pictures in the boomerang using the Aboriginal symbols on the tv. My prep buddy is Oscar and we have formed a friendship. Whenever we see each other, we give-high fives and knuckles.

When I got to my buddy’s classroom, she called out for me to come to her. We started doing PCG. We coloured Spiderman. After PCG, we sat on the floor. The teacher started explaining what we were going to do. We were going to read to our buddy and listen to our buddy read. My buddy started reading and I helped my buddy to read.

Writing News

We were introduced to information reports and the purpose, structure and language features of these texts. We read a text on Epic called ‘The Human Lifecycle’ and created our own information reports about this topic.

We studied Wedge Tailed Eagles. We read different texts about them, recorded facts and learned to paraphrase (record information using our own words). We used our research to create an information report about the Wedge Tailed Eagle. After our Big Write, we participated in ‘Breakdown Buddies’, where we learned to peer-assess our buddy’s writing and self-assess our own writing (to create our own writing goals).

We have been learning about life cycles for our Big Write. We wrote an explanation text. We each got to pick an animal, either a butterfly, turtle or chicken. Then we got a big sheet and we had to put all the main ideas on it. We had to research and plan it and make a rough draft. After, we had to highlight the openers, punctuation, vocabulary and connectives. Then we had to uplevel them and edit. Lastly, we had to publish our explanation texts.  by- Charli

HASS NEWS

We are investigating Biological Science this term. We are investigating habitats (rainforest, marine, African savannah, desert and the wetlands) and the animals and plants that live in each of these environments. We are also investigating how living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment. We are busily working in HASS groups to research an animal/plant of our choice and its habitat. We will present this information as an information report.

At the start of term, Year 5 students in WD4 visited the kinder children in the Integrated room at the Kinder. We spent time reading picture books to our buddies. l read a book called ‘MISS UNDERSTOOD’. My buddy's name is Winter. Firstly, we drew on  paper and played with magnetic blocks. We also played with the cubes and my buddy told me the colours of the cubes. Then we painted and decorated. After a while, we had to go back. We had so much fun. Written by Thadar

During the second week of Term 3, we went to the kindergarten nearby. It was so fun. I stole the cutest child ever and my mate was with the same buddy. We had 2 buddies. My buddy’s name is Peyton. Sshe likes Bluey and Baby Shark. It was very tiring. I learned that little kids have lots of energy and I do not want to be a kinder worker. I do not know how kinder workers get them to sleep. I played with the blocks and made a tower. I lifted her up and we made a tower that was 4.6 feet. We also played with texters, magnets and iron blocks.

During Week 2, we went to the Kinder nearby. It was tiring because the little kids kept running. I helped my buddy make a house out of magnets.

Hello, I’m Beau and this is my Kinder report. When we got in there, my friend and I immediately found a girl called Alisha, so we read to her and she loved the book. It was called Joshua and the Two Crabs. After that, she wanted to build a castle so we did. Every time we did it, this kid would destroy it. So we went to the magnet activity. They had a bunch of iron that she picked up.

The Year 5’s went to the kinder, which was in the Integrated Room. We brought a book to read the kinder kids. There were multiple things that the kinder kids wanted, such as building blocks, playing with clay and many more things. As some of the kids ran around, they broke and ruined some of the stuff that you would make.  Written by Angus

Sealife Aquarium

There was so much written by the students about their visit to Sealife, we made a separate page especially for the. Please check it out for their photos and their enthusiasm.

Hello! My name is Ethan and this is how I felt about the Sea Life Aquarium. The penguins were cool. Most of them stood in a teapot pose but the ones that swam were cool. The rain forest was great. There were a lot of animals! Downstairs, there were seahorses. There were all kinds of fish there. There was a crocodile and lots of rays that were very cool. When we went out to lunch, there were hundreds of birds - seagulls, pigeons and so many more. On the bus, it took 1 hour to go to Melbourne and back. We listened to lots of music on the bus. There were lots of families at the aquarium. It was a really fun day. My favourite part of the aquarium was the penguins. There was lots of snow and water in the penguin space than there should be. There was a spot where you could touch clams, rocks and Port Jackson shark eggs. The excursion was very good, but it was very tiring.

SRC Update

We have thoughts to make our school the best it can be. Our first idea was to make a hang out spot for the Year 7/8s. It will have new seats and 4 new trees that will provide shade in the summer time. The next idea was to build a beach volleyball court for the kids who play volleyball. The final idea that everyone is waiting for is to fix the Year 3-8 playground.
