VCE VM Community UPDATE

From the middle of the year that Further Education start to share with schools to attract enrolments or interest. They have a plethora of Open Days and experiences not only to try to encourage enrolment but importantly to let students see what kind of options they have that perhaps they had not considered.  Many of the Universities or Tafes have weekend or school holidays Open Days  but others try to organise visits as part of the school day. One such day was recently to Federation University.

VCE Federation Uni Excursion

The VCE cohort visited Federation University in Melbourne. Students learnt about applying for university courses and what it is like to live on campus.

“It was very helpful, hearing from the students who have been here for up to 3 years and sharing his ups and downs and also hearing any problems (payment) being explained. Being able to walk around in one room with many students from multiple different universities and being able to ask questions also was very helpful.” Sher K'prui

I liked the sports program. The people around Fed Uni were nice and telling us where to go when we got lost. It was a good experience for people who want to live at uni and wanted to go to uni” Lauren

Running around the campus doing the amazing race was fun” Jackson

“The jelly beans were really good - but seriously - . I learnt more about uni and made me want to go more” Elmin

“We could see how living at university would be. Gave us an idea of what our future would be like” Salim

“Fed uni was kinda interesting and showed the perspectives of what happens at university and about the different programs like the Elite Athlete Program and the scholarships. I’d be interested in the Elite Athlete Program playing basketball” Luok

“It was fun in the second part because of the amazing race and we go to see dorm rooms” Zack

“It was mind blowing, exiting and very educational. It was good to learn how life was at uni and the course work” Faith

Board Games in Year 11 Business Management

In Business Management one of the School Assessed Coursework activities  (SAC) we had was to a create a game, that revolves around a business plan. The winner of the game is the one with most cash and therefore the most successful business. There are different cards deck, two of them are being SP (positive scenarios) and SN (negative scenarios), whoever lands on will either pick a consequences card or prize card. We created it because it's a SAC to show an understanding of what we learnt in unit one business management and to show that learning how a business can be successful and what they should avoid. Masooma and Masoumeh designed the Land Rivals and I designed the Bee Game:  Elizabeth So Yuz

Be Bold, Be Heard

Ashton and Mendy represented Northern Bay College at the third Be Bold Be Heard Forum. BBBH is an annual collaboration that empowers the voices of female students across the region. The forum provided an opportunity for the BBBH groups across the schools in Geelong to meet and share their work. Students were working to make their schools more inclusive.

Students began the day with a dance fitness session and enjoyed mingling with other schools while making bead bracelets. They heard from a panel of inspirational women who shared their journey into their careers. The day finished with a circle of gratitude and homemade BBBH cupcakes!

VCE Update

The VCE program is in full swing and our students are busily engaged in their studies. Our Year 12 students are only a few short weeks away from completing their year. They are working hard and getting through the last few Units of work. We are talking to them at the moment about the intentions for 2024 and where they might like to study. Exciting Times! They are looking forward to finishing and commencing their revision period.

Our Year 11s have already voted on their Year 12 2024 jacket and are eagerly awaiting their chance to be ‘top of the tree’ at the school. They have a few more weeks to wait but have been working well in their classes.

Talking about Top of the Trees, it was the annual Ski Trip this term and 24 'intrepids' battled the weather .... No that was last year! - the weather this year was very kind as can be seen in some of the photos and so the challenge was simply to learn to board or ski to their full potential.

The group hit the slopes with Mr Parker at Mt. Buller and they had the best time!

VM VPC Update -

The first year of VM (Victorian Major) and (Victorian Pathways Certificate) VPC

In the Vocational Major (VM) and the Victorian Pathways Certificate (VPC) space, we have largely had a community focus. Primarily, the term started with careers being the central idea with all of our students took the bus to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre to learn about specific industries and trades at the Careers Expo.

Our Year 11 students also went on an excursion for an Industry Immersion experience with the Sharp Group, Geelong, on the Bellarine Peninsula. The Sharp Group own many businesses – Leura Park, Jack Rabbit, etc. First, we stopped and played mini golf at the Curlewis Golf Course. At the Flying Brick Cider Co, students visited the brewery at Leura Park Estate. We spoke with the viticulturalist (actual person who grew the vines) and we learnt that they were doing a replant (pulling out one crop and replacing it with another) in order to improve the quality and quantity of their grapes and ultimately the quality of their wines. Our students learnt that a lot of what they were being taught is so relevant in the real world. They were told that grammar was very important in writing letters of application – so important that it could be the difference of moving on to the next step in the hiring process or not. As well, the employees on site spoke of the community feel of the place which is similar to our VM/ VPC space.

Our VPC students went on the Port of Geelong Education Program. It was in two parts: an information session and a practical side where we went on a bay cruise to see said industries in action. It’s purpose? “The program provides a link between school, business and the global economy.” Students found opportunities for employment that existed right here on the waterfront. The Port of Geelong have stevedores, shipping managers for berthing of ships, etc. It was a lot of personal growth, both for new horizons to explore as well as extending current skills to other areas of employment.

On Fridays, the majority of our students are out on work placement. This is where they are linked up with businesses to experience what it would be like to work in their VET areas.

From a more local perspective; the Business Enterprise team are putting on stalls themed around community in Week 10 this term. Each group of students have a company name and they will be selling different products, games and services.

AS well, the Year 11 VM Literacy students go to Cloverdale Community Centre to follow through on a visit by Issara and two other staff members from Cloverdale, regarding projects to assist and support our local community.

Year 10 IMPACT

The Year 10's designed their own theme. From influences during semester one - the graffiti walls at camp, stage production & I Juliet and the diverse people they came across in Melbourne, the Year 10's decided to create a punk, street look with three characters being the main focus - a princess, a male and a non-binary person, with many hidden messages within their design. From a trip to the Op Shop to find their outfits, to their creative interpretations of crowns and their graffiti wall, this is going to be a window with a powerful message.

Year 10 quotes

The op shop trip, we went to a few different opshops as a class to search for an array of different items to use to assemble our fashion design unit. we looked for shoes, belts, hats, jackets, different textured clothing we could use to create patches or different textures within the clothing. - Ashton

For the past few days we've just continued to work on helping macca, ashton, and julia with creating their outfits. We also finished making our crows and starting making the backdrop. I wasn't there on the day but the class grabbed a big tarp and just spray painted it to look like it's been graffitied. Then we did pour painting on different pieces of paper and proceeded  to cut out the shape that the paint made. Then we are planning on putting all the paint cut outs onto the backdrop and using it in our shop window. - Kye

The final products will be on display in shop windows in the city next term

Here is a sneak preview of the fashion and backgrounds
