Incorporating Mathematics Apps into Classrooms

Every Classroom at Evans High School has a class set of computers connected to Wi-Fi. All classrooms have interactive display panels and dedicated desktops as ICT teaching resources.

Mathematical skills are fundamental to science and technology. It is one of the foundation elements of STEM which facilitates reasoning, critical thinking, and effective communication. When faced with multi-dimensional problems, these skills are vital for successful development of solutions. The most important achievement of a teacher is to support his/her students to develop and enhance tenacity and transform them into independent self-paced learners. The use of ICT in Mathematics is a contemporary tool that facilitates a problem-based, self-paced learning environment. Students are confronted with problems after an initial demonstration of the concepts and examples. This enables the students to learn and develop new in-depth knowledge by facing and solving a problem, which increases their engagement.

At Evans High, we subscribe to Maths Online, Mangahigh, Mathspace, Algebra Toolbox, Atomi and Smarter Maths applications. These online platforms bring all learning tools together including video lessons, worksheets, textbooks, and assessment tools. It allows the students to complete work online and receive instant feedback. Students also get scaffolded hints as they proceed to solve mathematical problems if they struggle with the correct answers.

Different applications are used to cater for the needs of students to develop a deeper understanding of important mathematical concepts. It challenges high achievers by providing a variety of critical problems and empowering them with higher-order thinking skills but also caters for those students who need scaffolds. The level of difficulty of questions in Mathspace and Maths Online is higher than what is available in textbooks and therefore engages and extends gifted and talented students to achieve their potential.

Students enjoy learning through Maths Apps because they provide immediate feedback, help them to improve their understanding, and allow them to use higher-order thinking skills consistently.
