Parent Morning Tea and Catch Up

This morning we held our parents' catch up. We know that Tuesdays can be tricky for some to attend, however we pushed ahead as planned.

One of our main agenda items was looking at how we can schedule opportunities for parent help for the range of activities and experiences that we provide at the campus. We have lots of volunteer assistance at the campus, and the feedback has been that parents are wanting to help out even more, which is brilliant!

We have decided that we will create a note to go home, detailing some opportunities available, as well as a section for parents to indicate which activities they would like to help out with. From this, we will create some rosters and share with everyone. Please keep an eye out over the next few days in your child’s bag for this note and return as soon as possible. Any help, be it large or little, is so very much appreciated!

New Goal Posts

This morning Simon and Shane were up at the campus measuring up the installation of our new goal posts. These have been in the works for quite some time, and will be great when they finally get erected, along with fancy new padding. The goal posts will be the first step in our planned makeover of the oval. We are currently in the process of submitting a grant application for improved drainage on the oval, so fingers crossed there!

Disco this Friday

There is lots of excitement building for the School Disco this Friday. If you haven’t booked your child in, please see the Disco section of this newsletter for more information. Should be a very fun time!

Wonder White Bread Bag Recycle

The Wonder White bread bag collection is coming to an end. If you have any empty bread bags, we would love for them to be brought to school to be recycled. All bread bags are recycled and turned into amazing plastic products such as fence posts and playground equipment. For every 5kg of plastic recycled, our school gets points to purchase some amazing sports equipment. We will be collecting bags until the end of July.

VSSS Excursion This Week

As with our past rehearsals, Scotsburn students will need to be dropped off and collected from Buninyong Campus this Friday. Please note the early drop off time (8:15am) and later pick up time (4.00pm). I will be remaining at school until after the senior disco, so if you have any concerns around getting students home and changed and then back in time for the disco, let me know and I will arrange a space for them to change into disco clothes and do some extra rehearsal. Please also check that your asthma management plans and medication are up-to-date. Please also check you have not ordered a lunch-order for this Friday!

100 Days of School

This Thursday 27th July, SC1 will be celebrating 100 days of school. We encourage all SC1 students to dress up, looking as if they are 100 years old or linking number 100 into a dress theme. We would also love students to bring a zip lock bag filled with 100 things. It could be smarties, sequins, 100s and 1000s, paper clips, pom poms, small stones, or leaves. Be creative, it is amazing to discover so many ‘100s’!

SC1 Buninyong Community Walk

On Friday 4th August, students in SC1 will participate in a Community Walk around the township of Buninyong to see some of the heritage plaques as part of our ‘Then & Now’ integrated topic this term. We will be leaving after assembly and will return after recess. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out.

SC1 Learning Snapshot

A fantastic week of learning in SC1 (even though it was only 4 days!).

In Literacy we continued looking at non-fiction texts, in particular headings and subheadings. We used our Writer’s Notebook to draw and label diagrams of certain animals and started writing facts about our chosen topics. This week, we have started putting all our facts together to draft our nonfiction writing pieces. We can’t wait to share what we have been writing about!

Multiplicative thinking remains our focus in Maths, using arrays to solve multiplication problems. We even looked at ‘arrays in real life’ - finding different arrays around the school. Are there any arrays around your house?

If you have any questions, please come in and chat with us.

SC2 Learning Snapshot

SC2 hit the ground running last week in many aspects. In Reading, we have been learning about identifying the main idea within non-fiction texts. Students have been reading about topics such as animals to determine the main idea, as well as finding details from within their reading that relate to their given topic. This has interrelated nicely with writing as students have been researching information about their chosen animal, in preparation for the drafting stage of their information reports this week. Students have been using Epic, as well as other resources to identify fun facts, information regarding habitat, diet and more.

In Maths, SC2 will round off their division unit this week, before moving onto length to kick-start our measurement month! They have been playing WAR throughout Maths Fluency in order to work on their automaticity throughout all Maths lessons and it has been great to see students showing a willingness to participate in these paired games with all members of the class at different times.

Our integrated topic ‘Someone Else’s Shoes’ has generated some deep and thoughtful discussion around what types of disadvantages there are around the world and how we might be able to help. We look forward to our cultural day down at Buninyong next week, with the many activities and experiences that we have planned for that day. Remember to jump onto the compass portal and provide consent for your child to attend this day.

There will also be some camp information going home this week, as well as some information that needs to be filled out and returned. We will aim to get that information out as quickly as possible so that we can be ahead and organised for Cave Hill Creek. We can’t wait!

Have a great week and I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend,

Mitch.

SC3 Learning Snapshot

SC3 certainly had another productive week in the classroom, with lots of learning in all areas. Reading has had a big focus on Fluency, and it has been pleasing to see all students take on the challenge to develop in this area, both out loud and with their internal voice.

In Writing, students have begun their free-write narrative. The ideas that have been generated from two weeks of immersion and planning are amazing! We have been spending a great deal of time looking at “show not tell”, working on using our five senses to add description and depth to our writing.

We have also just about rounded out our unit on division in Maths, with us also spending some time interpreting data for our Shark Tank project.

This week, you will notice on Compass our deposit has gone out for 5/6 Camp at the beginning of Term 4. Please do your best to pay this in the next two weeks to confirm your child’s spot on the camp. If there are any concerns or questions with this, please let me know.

Have a super week,

Jarrod

JAPANESE NEWS

We have begun a new campus challenge this term called “Noriko Sensei’s focus phrase of the fortnight”. This is an endeavour to consciously practise some Japanese phrases in our classroom (and hopefully home!) contexts. So far at school we are off to a great start, with SC3 out in the lead with recording each time they have remembered to say this fortnight’s phrase. It would be WONDERFUL if you would like to also play along at home, so we have made a QR code to assist with pronunciation. Keep an eye on the newsletters for the new phrases each fortnight, and please email me if you would like me to print some sheets for you to keep track of how many times you can say them at home!
