Peer Support Training

On Wednesday 1st December, approximately 40 Year 9 students participated in Peer Support training in preparation for supporting students in Year 7, 2022, who are transitioning into Senior School life.

Young people absorb information and values from their peers and the Girton Peer Support Leader programme entails training in Positive Peer Influence at the end of Year 9, to establish a group of leaders in Year 10 who will mentor Year 7 students in the coming year.

The idea is to form small family-sized groups of Year 7 students, each under the leadership of Year 10 students, and to provide security, guidance and friendship to help the Year 7 students adapt successfully to Senior School at Girton.

The Peer Support Leaders will be allocated sessions, usually during House Tutor times, to work with the Year 7 students. Peer Support Leaders also assist with Transition/Orientation Days towards the end of the year for the next cohort of Year 7 students.

Being a Peer Support Leader provides a valuable leadership opportunity in Year 10. Students who have undertaken this role have found it rewarding and have acquired leadership skills that have benefited them in other areas of their life and in future positions of school leadership.
