STEM

On Wednesday the Foundation, Year 1 and 3 enjoyed a STEM lesson with Ms Ferrier. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The challenge was to create a bridge that was more than 50 cm long and could hold the weight of three toy dinosaurs. Before we started our building, the students looked at many different types of bridges (eg. beam, truss, suspension) and we discussed the following questions:

  1. What are the similarities and differences of different types of bridges?
  2. What are the different materials used?
  3. What properties do you think a good bridge needs?
  4. Who or what do you think uses these bridges?

Then we began planning the bridges in small groups and then the creating began! We tested our bridges at the end. Our Year 3s were terrific buddies too. Special thanks to Pippa and Thomas who were helping with the photography.
