What's Been Happening in Visual Arts?

In Our Communities...

Luna & Achilles Communities (Preps)

Our Foundation students have been looking as primary and secondary colours.

Using plasticine, students are experimenting with red, blue and yellow and what happens if you mix these colours together.

They have also made primary colour spy glasses with cellophane to be able to see colour change by looking at 2-3 primary colours at the same time.

Argus, Xenica & Ulysses Communities (Year 1&2)

The 1&2 Communities have been continuing with their weaving practice from last term. Now that they have developed an understanding of what weaving is and how to weave, they are creating dreamcatchers with straws, strings, beads and feathers. These dreamcatchers teach students how to place the string so they may weave other pieces of string to create an intricate design.

Apollo & Icarus Communities (Year 3 & 4)

The Year 3&4 Communities have been developing their skills with observational drawings of naturally found objects. Students have continued with this and experimenting with watercolours to give depth to their picture.

They are now at the point of their work where they are cutting out their nature pictures and learning about picture placement. Once they have cut out their picture students have to determine where each picture will go on a coloured background to enhance their whole image.

Students have been creating some amazing pieces when taking placement into consideration.

Monarch Community (Year 5&6)

The Monarch Community have continued working on different activities, a continuation of last term, students in alternating classes are working on clay sculptures or lino prints.

Students are in the process of painting their tiki clay sculptures and bringing their designs to life. Lino cut students are working between etching the lino or printing it onto paper with ink.

They are working on lino placement to see how their image looks if it is printed multiple times. They also have the opportunity to use a variety of ink colours, like, pink, blue, yellow and black.

Throughout September and October, children aged 5-12 are invited to create an original artwork of one of Australia’s many threatened native animals or plants, along with a short-written component on their chosen threatened species.

Online submissions are open from Wednesday 7 September (Threatened Species Day) to Monday 31 October.

Please follow the link for more information and where to submit a photo of your child’s artwork:

This could make a great holiday activity and I encourage all students to participate! There are several different entry categories as well as prize giveaways. Artworks must be the child’s original work and either a painting, drawing, or mixed media work such as a collage. Three-dimensional work, photographs, digitally created work and videos will not be accepted.

Please follow the link for tips and ideas for helping your child get started creating their own masterpiece!
