SAKG NEWS

As a result of the recent rain and intermittent sunshine, a lot of growth can be seen in the garden.  Students have enjoyed the harvesting and eating of our tasty snow peas. Due to the  unusual wet weather, our planting schedules have been a bit delayed.  Currently going into the garden beds are spinach, corn, broad beans, and lettuce, with tomatoes and cucumbers to come over the next month. During classes, students have had the enormous task of trying to beat the snails and slugs.  You may have seen a lot around your homes, so you can only imagine that our school garden is like paradise for them.  In order to protect our plants students have been busily foraging and disposing of them.  Another task students have been completing in class has been temperature testing.  This has been of soil, pots and plants and students have been learning about the ideal temperatures for plants to grow.

In the kitchen, students continue to cook up a storm. A delicious menu of roasted root vegetables, cauliflower pizza with margarita topping, gosleme and fruit crumble are being enjoyed.  Students have been working on their cutting and kneading skills whilst preparing these dishes.  A big thank you goes to Kate, who is stepping in for Lyn whilst she is on leave, thus enabling the kitchen program to continue.

Please look out for our community share trolley which is placed out in the yard near the 3-4 soccer pitch on a Tuesday and Thursday morning and occasionally after school.  It is stocked with a range of garden matter, from plants, flowers, seeds and produce.  Families are more than welcome to take something or alternatively donate to the community share trolley (particularly if you have excess of something at home which is garden related).

At the next assembly, names of students who have either volunteered their time in the garden over recess or lunchtime or been identified as a garden star during classes will be drawn out and will receive a prize (potted plant) as a small token of thanks for their efforts in the garden.
