Inquiry

As part of our focus on Creativity we have been using 'Design Thinking'. We have been considering why objects have been created and what purpose they serve. We have also been looking at why some objects can be made in different ways and with different materials.

We have been practising the skill of drawing with precision and accuracy, while imagining and innovating.

Literacy

Last week we continued our work on Poetry.

We practised using different forms of poetry including;

 cinquain (with rules about the types of words to use - nouns, verbs and adjectives),

haiku (making sure each line had the correct number of syllables - 5, 7, 5),

acrostic (where every line starts with a letter from the title of the poem) and

rhyming couplets (where the end of each line rhymes).

We chose our favourite poem from the week to publish for our class book.

This week we have used the book 'Annie's chair' as our inspiration to further practise our design thinking and precision drawing. We have worked on using a wide range of vocabulary when writing a description of Annie's chair. Our next step is to decide on how we would change and improve the chair design, and write an explanation about what we have changed and why.

Education in Faith

During the month of October, we are learning about the Rosary.

Students had the opportunity to learn about each of the special prayers we use when saying the Rosary and we looked at lots of different sets of rosary beads that are used.

Maths

Last week we used a number of strategies to divide numbers up into sets.

We started with the total number of objects and broke them into groups of a particular amount to find out how many sets we could make - for example;

24 flowers with 2 flowers in each vase, how many vases can I fill?

25 lollies with 5 lollies in each jar, how many jars can I fill?

23 students with 4 students in each team, how many teams can I make?

We used concrete materials (counters, icy pole sticks and blocks), drawings and number lines to represent our sets in different ways.

We discovered that skip counting can be super helpful for this job!

We also discovered that sometimes we end up with left overs and they are called remainders.

If you haven't had a chance, please let us know if you are coming along to the prayers in pyjamas night on November 9th at 6pm - it would be great if you can come along and share in our special junior school event.

Keep up the terrific word practise, reading and counting that has been going on!
